neck pocket fitting

Why don't you secure the neck into the body cavity and then put a stop collar on your drill bit. Set the stop collar just a touch deeper then the neck that way when you drill the holes the collar will stop the bit just as it drills through the neck leaving a small indent in the body.

Truthfully the best thing to do is fill the holes in the neck with wood and glue, sand flat, then drill the larger holes in the body to line up with the neck plate. Then attach/join the neck and body to locate the hole locations in the neck. Drill the neck holes smaller than the screws threads. Then bevel out the holes on both surfaces so when the surfaces mate there is no wood residue from the screws entering the neck to interfere with a good mating of the flat surfaces. That kills sustain and tone.

well, in the mean time... i've resolved to drill different holes in the neck. the thing is this is an already made neck i will use with a new body meanwhile i make my own neck.

i do not want to make the holes but it is better to make them than ruin the old ones putting screw bad located which will expand the holes and at some point they wont have grip
 
The neck pocket screw holes should be larger than the screws. The screws should easily pass through the holes without resistance. The screws thread in to the neck. If the larger holes in the neck pocket don't line up with the smaller, threading holes in the neck then the only solution is to see if you can make the neck pocket holes a little larger so the screws can easily pass through the body and align with the neck screw holes. You're making a change to the body/neck pocket holes, not the neck. You may have to open up the holes in the neck plate as well.
the holes i made in the piece of wood were very small but the screws go in not easily but by turning the screw driver. do you think making holes a little bit bigger would help?
 
hello, im making the neck pocket on a piece of wood before making it on a body im working on.

The problem happens when i connect the neck with the screws. the neck gets lifted by the screws by two milimeters or 1,5.

i believe the problem is the depth of the neck pocket or maybe the screws....


Transfer punches, see McMaster Carr! There are two different types. One is just a specifically sized dowel with a point at one end made for going through a hole, like going through the body into a new neck.

Since you have a neck with holes you wish to use, rather than dowel and redrill anew, you will need the OTHER type.

These are known as transfer buttons. A point is a one end and a specific diameter dowel fits into the hole where the screw went. The issue here is the pocket will have to perfect fit otherwise there is likely to be misalignment.

thanks, i have almost solved the problem but im not drilling the holes today because i have to give back the forstner bit that somebody lend to me. i have to use it drilling the electronics cavity tomorrow mourning.
 
The screws must pass thru the body unencumbered. If they don't, there is a possibility of a gap between the neck and body. Tone and sustain killer.
