Neck Question

I just picked up a really nice Peavey Forum bass neck in a crazy trade with a bunch of gear. Neck is in great shape, I just don't know how to store a random "neck". Can I lean it against a wall? Should I hang it from a hanger? Lay it flat? I have no use for it, I just don't know how to store it.

Suggestions?

I am interested in this as well. I have a couple (I don't plan on using) leaning against the wall in the back of my closet, away from vents and out of direct sunlight. The truss rods are tightened enough to keep the necks straight. I've heard necks should be stored under slight tension so they don't obtain and retain a bow. My instinct tells me I should hang them but I just don't have the space.

I hang mine in a closet. Makes sure that you loosen the truss rod. Don't loosen it all the way but most of the way.

I have some and just put them straight, don’t know if it’s better than completely loosen the truss rod though?

In practice / theory, a fingerboard should be perfectly flat with NO truss rod counter-tension in play.

I'll assume they're single not dual-acting? This does not necessarily render them useless as we don't have a clue as to how they'll respond to ~150 lbs of compression.

Not sure but I think the Squier pbass neck I have is dual… As for the cheap Chinese Jazz neck, I don’t know?

Not sure myself but merits investigation. Adjust at the headstock or heel? In either case, the nut should be slack.

Laying flat with just a bit of tension on the truss rod is the way to go to avoid deformation. Storing it in a place where there is no or little humidity variation also helps. Direct sunlight must be avoided as well.

When possible, I remove the truss rod nut, lube it with some Teflon synthetic grease, put it back, putting and removing tension a few times to lube the thread of the truss rod itself to avoid corrosion.

Different camps on this one...believe I got this from @Turnaround . I should have stuck to "in theory" as some necks have a modicum of relief crafted-in.

My take is that the truss rod’s function is to counteract the string tension. No string tension - no truss rod tension.
