I was mostly bein' silly. I do understand that 300-500 is about all I need, and that's what I was planning on originally- but someone near me has a good deal on a head, and it happens to be 1200 watts. Far more than I'll probably ever need, but I really like this particular head. This means I'll have to get a bigger cab too- I'm planning on a Dr Bass, none of which go to 1200, so I'll be running the head at 4 ohms, making it 750 watts. I could even go for eight, making it... 450, I think, if I want to get a smaller cab.

Don't worry, I'm not entirely a drooling "MUST HAVE LOUD" bassist. :)

I often use amps with double the power rating of the cab.
This is not a problem unless you want to turn you amp all the way up, or jack the bass frequencies all up.

Heh, just saw this post. Yup, I still have a few AMP pieces including a few BH420 heads. I'm thinking of letting one or two go. Hmmmmm.... ;)

I've got a Kustom Groove 1200 (the one that Chef linked to) and it has enough volume for my application. I've got an 8 ohm Avatar B212 cab and was cutting through like a mad man (this is according to my scouts in the crowd). At 8 ohms, the Kustom can put 500W into the cab. I do have a Behringer 410 cab (4 ohm) but I haven't used it for a while. I was playing it last night at a little concert. I had someone play my bass while I went out into the audience while we were setting up. I could not stand the sound. I played the night with only the B212 and it was more than enough. It sounded a lot better alone, as well. I used to like them together, but last night was unpleasant.

I am still considering the Avatar B210 as a compliment. I'll have to sell the Behringer BA410, but I'm not worried about that (except for finding a buyer). It'd be nice to get down to 4 ohms and have the separate cabs as reliable stand alone options.

I don't think you'll ever hear me complain about the Kustom. I am very pleased with it and grateful that jeremyr sold it to me. Pair it with an Avatar cab and you have a powerful rig that won't cost too much.

One thing I am worried about is cutting through. From where I stand I have a hard time hearing myself, but people listening say they can. That is the case even when I'm right in front of the stack (a cab at near ear level). I've tried EQing it to include more mids but I'm no good at that stuff. I'd be worried to be playing with 300W. I realize that is likely an invalid fear, but I can't help but worry.
