Need a "hippie" bass... suggestions?

I've been asked to play in a 60's - 70's hippie-type band (ala Cream, Yardbirds, Hendrix, Zombies) kinda "acid rock". The thing is that the band wants to really get the "psychodelic" vibe, and I only have mostly modern type basses... so, I need some suggestions - cheaper is better - definitely no more than $700, 4 string, fretted.
Another thought is to modify my Squier Jazz with some interesting graphics. Any suggestions?

+1... the SG shape or the standard Strat shape would probably be the best look.... tie some scarves on the headstock and you're good to go

Take a cool at all the crazy basses (and other instruments) John Paul Jones is playing with Them Crooked Vultures and you will see what I mean. He plays 4, 8, 10 and 12 string basses among other weird stuff. Their music reminds me a lot of Cream and harder acid rock.

Seriously, a P, a Jazz, a SG, a RIC, etc. Most will work.

cant go wrong with aq sunburst precision with a tortoise guard and rosewood board... id try to get a used MIJ for that price range... when I play hendrix covers thats what i rock... though mine is a lawsuit ibanez

Easy. What do each of the bands you listed use? Looks to me like:

Gibson SG style. Fender Jazz, Fender P.

Rickenbacker as well, but these are expensive and I'm not aware of any knock-offs in production.

I am in a "hippie" band and I play a fiesta red 50's precision. I don't think there is a quenticential "hippie" bass. Maybe a Guild Starfire like Lesh's "Godfather". Maybe an Epiphone Jack Cassady?
