Need a knife

I`ve noticed no one has mentioned leatherman....I no virtually nothing about serious knives so maybe they just plain suck?
I have used this for the past two years for everything from landscaping work to camping stuff and have never ever had a problem with it:

Mine doesn`t have the scissors or the extra large screwdriver tip but pretty much everything else...

Multi-Tools are very popular. It all comes down to what fits your needs. Like the various knives I have around here, we also have an assortment of multi tools. I can't get used to carrying one since I hardly ever wear a belt and most are too heavy for pocket carry. I use mine around the house quite often. Like knives, buy a quality one, nothing is more useless than a cheap, chinese mutli tool :(

What do you think about Spyderco?

I have a few Spyderco knives but I'm not that familiar with their mutli tools. The multi tool I like best is made by Gerber. I also have several OLD Leathermans that are still going strong. I prefer to carry a hard use, tactical style folding knife and use regular tools if possible. I like to keep a multi tool in my Jeep or on my desk but not on my person. Some people carry them 24/7 :)

Bah... I spent a long time walking around looking at stuff in alleged "camping" and "backpacking" stores. All anyone had was cheap junk. It felt like stuff that belonged in a dollar store. the ocasional leatherman was the "quality" offering, but not even remotely what I'm looking for... I may bite the bullet and order a skirmish or something similiar that was suggested. I decided though that a new criteria is something without silly little holes and apparantly cool holes here and there. This knife will be covered in blood and dead stuff and I want to be able to clean it afterward.

Thanks for the discussion though. Its good to see what people carry now and then. I don't think the fixed blades are for me though... Just not quite what I'm after right now.

The Benchmade 630 and 635 (Skirmish) are very easy to clean. Instead of a solid backspacer, the titanium frame is very "open" being held together by standoffs. Having no handle onlays, the lock bar slot is also easy to access and clean. I've used mine to clean fish and when I was finished, I stuck the knife in my fish cleaning table and blasted everything with my pressure washer! Ad a drop of oil to the pivot and it's ready to go again. ;)

I bought my Benchmade online in Germany, 30% cheaper than here and a wide variety of choices.

Hey, I was just poking around CRKT's website and I happened across this knife, which in my opinion, looks great. Anyone have any experience with the "autolawks" feature? I am interested in how it compares to the Axis lock or just a good frame/liner lock?

[edit] would probably help if I added the link: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

By the way, this was the type of knife that saw most action when I was doing my military service:

There's nothing fancy about it, except the fact that you can buy half a dozen of these for ten bucks. Durable enough with the molden plastic handle, functioned perfectly in all the tasks it was needed, and there was no need to be careful with it, since most guys had two or three at the bottom of the pack anyways.

By the way - and this has nothing to do with the subject except that maybe it shares the practical viewpoint - but I'm constantly surprised that when you go to a knife dealer, you have hundreds of different "tactical fighting knifes" with hooks, prongs, tanto-edges, camo paints and whatnot going for 300 bucks. I really don't know who would carry one into battle - they sure look cool, but is it worth it if they aren't very practical for anything, and you have a good chance of losing one or two every month?

So I bought a knife today (sorry Blackwood, it wasn't one of yours. They're harder to find with the options I want...). I got a Benchmade Apparition:

I love the assisted opening! Your skirmish is next, Neil!

This is actually one of the main reasons why I don't carry my +100 $ Benchmade around...I'm afraid of losing it :crying:

Cool!! Those are nice. Mel Pardue and Warren Osbourne worked up that design. The longer you use it, the smoother the assisted opening will get. You got knife gas?? :D

I'm still liking my Rukus auto. It's tough, yet works very smoothly and if I loose it, I would be pissed but I wouldn't cry!! I carried one of my good customers knives all weekend. It was back in the shop for a refurb. I decided to pack it up for shipping before I lost it. Russ has a tattoo of my logo (the same one as on the knife blade) on the back of his head, much more than a customer, a true brother from another mother :) Below is my bro Russ's Curr.

Well... todays hike was rained out since I'm not outfitted for anything serious yet...

Ordered a mini-skirmish in the end. Sizes, shape, and such seemed like the closest to what I was looking for even if it wasn't exact. Not too far up from my price range either.

Now I'm just hoping that it doesn't get too slippery when its wet and that the handle (excuse the poor terminalogy... ) isn't too thin for my liking.

For my money, Benchmade makes the finest mass-production blades out there. I've used many many knives in my military career, and Benchmade has never let me down, plus their customer service is first-rate. Currently, I have a Grip (550) for general carry, and on my combat gear, I carry a 141 Nimravus (fixed tanto blade) and a 9100 Auto-Stryker (it opens too fast for the eye to follow after a tuneup by Benchmade's LifeSharp service).
For multi tools I've owned most of the big names in the last 15 years, and nobody comes close to the Victorinox SwissTool (makers of the Swiss Army Knife). It's durable, well made, and darn near indestructable.
I used to swear by Gerber, but they seem to have changed their production in the last 15 years or so. They seem much more cheaply made. One of my guys has a new Guardian, and it doesn't compare to the Guardian I bought in the 80's. We're also currently issued Gerber multi tools, and they break with alarming regularity--especially the pliers.

@FL Knifemaker; I just informed with mr. Wolfster in Germany (huge online knife store), and he can order your Outdoor Edge knife and sell it to me for 55 euro. I like!

That Neil's Outdoor Edge looks pretty good to me - if I would do any hunting on regular basis, I'd get one as a secondary blade to use on the game. I'd love to get one of those Benchmade Rukuses, too.. To bad I don't have any use for a solid folder :crying:

I'm actually considering to become a bit more american and getting a Böker SubCom folder as a tiny utility knife :ninja:

Very cool stuff

Yes, Dave, the owner of Outdoor Edge does the EWA Show in Germany and has a lot of european distributors. It's a great little knife, especally for the money. If you're into hunting, theres also a gut hook version. Outdoor Edge makes some GREAT gear, game saws, game processing sets and some nice hunting knife sets other than my designs. Glad you found a source, I think you'll very happy with their product.
