Need a knife

For my money, Benchmade makes the finest mass-production blades out there. I've used many many knives in my military career, and Benchmade has never let me down, plus their customer service is first-rate. Currently, I have a Grip (550) for general carry, and on my combat gear, I carry a 141 Nimravus (fixed tanto blade) and a 9100 Auto-Stryker (it opens too fast for the eye to follow after a tuneup by Benchmade's LifeSharp service).
For multi tools I've owned most of the big names in the last 15 years, and nobody comes close to the Victorinox SwissTool (makers of the Swiss Army Knife). It's durable, well made, and darn near indestructable.
I used to swear by Gerber, but they seem to have changed their production in the last 15 years or so. They seem much more cheaply made. One of my guys has a new Guardian, and it doesn't compare to the Guardian I bought in the 80's. We're also currently issued Gerber multi tools, and they break with alarming regularity--especially the pliers.

That's great to hear!! I couldn't be happier working with them, a first class operation all the way.

I have a few Spyderco knives but I'm not that familiar with their mutli tools. The multi tool I like best is made by Gerber. I also have several OLD Leathermans that are still going strong. I prefer to carry a hard use, tactical style folding knife and use regular tools if possible. I like to keep a multi tool in my Jeep or on my desk but not on my person. Some people carry them 24/7 :)

Yeah, I've never used their multi-tools, but that knife I posted above is a sweet. I use that on the boat DAILY. I can't sing the praises of a good knife more. The sharper the better. I have a small Leatherman muti-tool too, and I use that mostly for cutting my fingernails with the scissors. LOL.

Serrated blades have their uses for sure. They also have their downsides. Again it all depends on what you need it for. I have an old Spyderco Civilian which is one of the best fighting knives ever designed, IMHO. It's serrated to cut flesh or clothing, a wicked knife indeed. Many people like partially serrated blades, sort of the best of both worlds. When I was sailing I always carried a serrated Spyderco Mariner with an aluminum frame, probably the knife your's is bassed on. My "Feind" neck knife is the perfect everyday knife for me. It cuts like crazy and the blade is strong enough to pry packing staples without breaking the blade tip. If I had to cut rope on occasion, I would give it some serrations.........but I dont :)

Yeah, this knife would do a nasty number on someones flesh, but it is mostly used for cutting line. I also used to for scraping barnicles off of our mooring line. I was able to retrieve enough for bait that allowed up to catch a couple sea bass.

I have a cheap little curved and serrated Spyderco copy that I got for work.

I mainly only used it for cutting seat belts. So I think of it as a seat belt cutter. But when other people see it they think of it as an impending murder weapon.

I guess it looks kind of spooky.

People are goofy.

FLK, that is one heck of a beauty! Once i let the bass gear alone, I will have to get you to make one with a 3.5 inch or 4" blade. I haven't ordered a custom since I lost a a sweet framelock that Mike obenauf made for me around 2004.

Hey, here's a pic of my new Benchmade Apparition. Also shown is my new STI Spartan - a great 1911 for a fantastic price. It won the Single Stack division at today's IPSC match....

Thanks!! I know Mr. Obenauf!! Nice guy and and a great knifemaker. After the the SHOT Show in January things will be back to normal for me and I should be able to start orders again.

This is my carry knife, a Benchmade Mini Rukus. It was new in this pic, now it's well worn!! Having it almost a year is a record for me :D

Well, this little guy just showed up today...

Seems great so far... pretty comfortable, a little heavier than it looked, but good even with a thinner grip than I'm used to. I just wish I had the tool I need to take the little clip off... I hate those things. I guess with a little luck she'll see some use this weekend and I can pass judgement a little better.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

HA!! What a great knife :D If you want to take the clip off and don't want to buy a set of Torx drivers just take it in the hardware store and "borrow" one for a second!! Being thin, they really ride nicely in the pocket using the clip though ;)

That's a beauty, but double edged balisongs scare me. I used to be pretty good at manipulating single edge balis, but I always feared slicing off a finger with a double edged one.

I hear you Doc!! I'm not a bali flipper, at least not a very good one. I drove the tip of a Benchmade Bali WAY up under my thumbnail once, that was enough for me  These big Bali's usually come with Teflon bushings that slow the handles down. They are adjusted so they just barely won't fall under their own weight, flipping them isn't really possible. My design goal with these is a VERY strong folding field knife, not a typical Filipino style bali! I do have customers that request them with bronze bushings so they can be flipped, double edge and all. Putting clear tape along the top edge makes it a bit safer but still not something I like to do. I need to make a living using my hands...........and fingers :D I do make single edge versions and other blade styles as well.
