Need a little advice in a crappy setuation.

9mm thought was not to hurt anyone but more of protection if I had to go over there and he had a weapon.I am not going to murder anyone.

Even more reason to maintain a degree of seperation. Even if you have to use it for protection it's still hurting someone and murdering someone, he could also always unload on you before you have a chance to protect yourself. Not to mention if he's already pissed and everyones adrenaline is kicking, you might misconstrue some of his actions and shoot him for the wrong reasons.

If she can't get out of the house and get to you then the best thing you or anyone can do is simply call 911 and let the police sort it out.

Don't worry about that, that was yesterday when I was planning on going there with her to get her stuff, I am not going to call cops, that's for sure. No offence to cops but if anything goes down..they won't make it in time. Rather trust myself then police. That part is over with. If she is smart enough I will help her move and I will make sure he is not there at the time. If she is dump enough to take him back and not listen to me. Screw it.

so ok, real quick (this time it's of my computer, so it's more readable.) Forget about physical actions, I'll deal with those, i am good at it. It's more of feelings actions i am bad at.

Do you guys think it's right to talk her out of making up with this guy? So far every time idea of making up with him comes across her mind, she has called me as in "what should i do?". Do you think it's a good thing that every time i talked her out of it? I basically try to make her feel better about herself and let her know she deserves better (I know, it's cheesy).

I basically don't want to tell her what to do (which i avoid) but i want her to make the right choice and not to get hurt again, which if she stays will happen, I am fairly sure.

Plus thanks guys, it's also strangely making me vent and I want to destroy this guy less and less.

sorry if this is an obvious question, but do you have any kind of feelings for her? careful how you go, if so.

in any case - or assuming you don't - i would encourage her to get herself out of the situation. in the end, though, it's GOT to be her decision.

Nope, love her as a friend - she is a very sweat girl. Other then that, I don't think so.

And, that's what i thought. Thanks.

There are really only two (rational) ways for a woman to get out of an abusive relationshhip. The best, of course is for her to get herself out - you can encourage and educate her all you want, but if she doesn't take the initiative to take the appropriate actions, it won't matter (and you'll likely be the one caught in the middle at some point). The second is that there is intervention by the police - this is usually only effective in a limited way and will be the likely outcome of her not taking the action outlined above. It will also prolong the pain and misery (both emotional and physical) she is dealing with and will typically get worse over time.

I would strongly recommend you keep yourself as far away as possible from the situation (physically speaking). And if you don't heed this advice, please don't be foolish enough to carry a gun over there with you. Best case, you will probably end up in prison, sued or both - especially after posting on the internet about your intent to go over there to intervene carrying said weapon for self defense. Worst case, someone (or multiple someones) ends up shot. Every stat in the book will tell you that chances are good that it won't be the bad guy. As a former police officer, I got the privilege of working a good number of domestic violence cases. If I ever rolled up to a domestic with two guys and a girl, one of which had a gun - guess who immediately gets to be the target? You do.

The situation sucks - good you have empathy for her and hope you can talk some sense into her. Or perhaps influence others in her life that may have more pull than you to do the same. She might listen to her mom\dad\best friend more than you. I wish you the best...

I have mixed emotions on that. As a friend I think it's right that you're trying to talk her out of it. From a professional standpoint I think you should remain as unbiased as possible.

Before my now ex fiance and I got together we were pretty good friends. She was in an abusive marriage and rather than telling her what she should do or why she should leave him (which I thought she should) I would ask probing questions to get her to see both the pro's and con's of the relationship. In short, I'd more or less help her find reasons to stay and leave him. Then her and I would discuss the reasons and what they all meant to her. It took some time (a few months) for her to see that the con's outweighed the pro's but once she did, she decided to move out. The bottom line of why she didn't leave him sooner was fear. Which is why most women in relationships like these tend to remain in them and also partially why I think your friend keeps contemplating going back to him.

I basically don't want to tell her what to do (which i avoid) but i want her to make the right choice and not to get hurt again, which if she stays will happen, I am fairly sure.

One thing you have to keep in mind, what you think is the right choice might not be the one she thinks is right. Also keep in mind that just because he hit her once doesn't mean he'll hit her again. He might not, and I emphasize might.

We have a Batter's Intervention program where I work. We use the Duluth Model. Granted we counsel the abuser but the information can also be beneficial to the victim. It might help her see her relationship a tad more clearly.

Below is a link to some good information that you can research and even show her that might help her to see things a little more clearly.

If you are going to be in the middle of this and it sounds like you are, try to remain as unbiased as you can. Bias will only cloud your judgement and rationale and could be counter-productive.

Ok, good idea... but, what type of question are we talking about? Are we talking on the line of "if you say he got progressively close to you, he got worse, how much worse do you think he will get?" or something regarding what he might do to kids? Or are those too leading of the questions? Would they come off as more of "telling what to do" rather then "think about this."

Unfortunately or fortunately, i don't think i have a choice, she calls me and text me numerous times a day.

"might not hit her" in my head is out of the question, he has history of throwing fits and being violent over nothing, including WoW game or when he messes up on guitar hero. No one is surprised about this. With her, he got worse every time i saw them. At first was when we were hanging out he would just not be around, then it was storming out in raging fit while punching walls, then it was him screaming at her, after that throwing stuff around, after that destroying stuff, then it was this, hitting her and then after she left he went to her room and spend what seems to be good amount of time braking her stuff. I forgot to say that part, a lot of her possessions are broken.

If it's getting worse and worse, i can't imagine it getting any better as he gets more comfortable, especially if she comes back. He already been through therapy crap, didn't seem to work.

So, real quick, asking questions, how do you make her see pros and cons if there were not really any pros, only "I love him." Guy was a complete jerk to her and honestly, everyone he knows. I''ll try to stay natural, it's kinda hard though, guy is a scum. Basically, what kind of questions are we talking about?

And people, forgot about guns, i shouldn't even said anything. That was original idea when i first heard it and thought i might have to go there and help her get her stuff out with him in it. This is the way i would have handled that situation. Right now it's different and i am not planning on carrying a gun anywhere.

you do have a choice.....you can tell her that you are willing to help her extricate herself from that situation if she decides to,but you will not get mired in the enabling role that it seems she wants you to play...then stop making yourself available as the third player in this game

forget about making her see,if she doesn't see it after getting beat up it's unlikely anything you say will change that..more scummy types have girlfriends than you might imagine.....

Ah, I see. And you don't want to get into slippery situations.

Puns aside, I think you're doing the right thing by talking her out of going back with the guy. However, if she makes a habit out of it, she will probably end up with the guy anyway, and during an argument your name will come out. The other bad scenario is that you will become the new outlet for her dependant behavior, if that is what she displays.

So my advice is that you should make it clear to her that only she will change her situation. You can help her while things are moving, but if she settles for the same problems, there's nothing you can do.

This sounds exactly like my ex fiances ex husband. He was pulling all that crap with her and more. I asked "was he like this when you were dating? Do you think it has progressively gotten worse over time? How does that (his behaviors) make you feel? Then based on her answers I'd probe even more. With her I gave her reasons to stay and to leave and when she finally realized the bad outweighed the good I told her "well there you go, you now know what you should truly do."

What is it you love about him? What is it you dislike about him? Are you affraid that the situation will only get worse? Do you honestly believe it can get better? If yes, then how? Do you feel the good outweighs the bad? Is it possible that you're only with him now because you're comfortable, for financial reasons, no place else to stay? Do you feel you're to blame for him hitting you, breaking your things, etc? (If she says yes to this one then point out to her that he is responsible for his own actions and he made the choice to hit her. In short, she's not to blame he is.) Probe about how safe she feels the kids are too.

Now unfortunately, you still can't make her see the pro's and con's. All you can do is help present them to her and hope she realizes them.

Would be easier if she wasn't a good friend.

Ok then, i was close... I brought up all those subjects and she actually talked about them as i listened. They were not in form of a question though, more of "think about this..." ...i'll keep that in mind.

I saw her today, i am 98% sure she is not going back to him, which is pretty huge.

Bad thing right now is the following. She pulls the "no one can tell that there is something wrong" act very well. A bit scary, because i do the same, I can't hide when i am worried about someone else but when i have a problem, i don't show it. At least she talked to me, i don't do that. I know i pissed few friends of on 25th because they kept on asking and i kept on avoiding talking about it, they told me I do it all the time. :D

Either way, she said she is very serious about moving back to So Cal, which IMO is very unhealthy. One, she is not dealing with problems, she is trying to run away from them and makes excuses to do so. I am not trying to be selfish, i rather see her safe rather then keeping her around, but even though she'll be better of in short run, she will hurt in a long run. She is basically trying to start over back home. I never told her any of my feelings on that and i probably will not. Like i said, she had few douchebags back at home, i hope she doesn't go back to them because they were just a nudge better. Also, because she is planning on running away from this, i imagine he hurt her more then she is telling me.

We'll see... She IMed me 30 minutes ago, but i was not here. Sorry guys, this kinda stuff scares me... I know how to handle a lot of things, but this kind of things are touch.

Tomorrow, my buddy is going to see the scumbag at work... It's going to be hard for him, i know it... Whole thing sucks, weirdest Christmas ever. We've decided that worse thing we can do to him is just kill all relationships with him and never talk to him again. Doing anything further will hurt her more then him, I can see how she will feel bad for "causing" this and go back, so that's out of the pictures unless he goes after her again. Hopefully my buddy doesn't snap.

BTW, it was over a game..... Basically, way we figured from bits and peaces we found out from her is that he was playing games online whole day, I think she wanted to do stuff and they got in a small argument, she then turned of a router and then............ Over a ****** game....

I don't care if he knows. One, all my ties to this guy are ended, He is not welcomes around me ever again. Two, I want him to know that if he hurts her again (even if she is weak enough to go back (which like i said is unlikely)) I will find him and he better be afraid of me and a lot of other people.

As far as your advice, thank you, I will keep that in mind, maybe being too helpful might hurt her in long run and she will make same mistakes. Thanks man.

Like i said before, thanks guys, I really do read your comments and consider all of them. This is just not my comfort zone, I am afraid of messing up. I am totally ok with messing my life up, but ones i care about, makes me very fearful.
