Right, but you have not delivered the power to a 4 Ohm load that makes sound. That dummy load would just be making heat, and eating power. All your solution offers, is paying for a dummy load. It doesnt increase the power/spl output.

EDIT: And I believe that a 4 ohm 3x12 driven by an SVT 7 Pro would probably, in fact, make sound.

And with his SVT 7 pro, there is no benefit as the amp is quite happy operating at 5.3 ohms. There will be no increase in volume. All you have offered him is additional cost, and potential failure due to power handling needs being huge.

Your idea would actually result in less output then just running a 3X12.

Sure, the "dummy load" would help get to 4 ohms. But now the delivered power gets split 4 ways instead of 3.

It comes down to whether you accept the OP's specs as the starting point, or whether you want to take issue with them. If you want the OP to run his amp at 5.3 ohms, then that's ultimately an issue with his parameters, not with the solutions that get us there.

If the OP wants a 4 Ohm 312, then he needs custom drivers. That isnt likely. So he can go with one of the crack brained options offered here, but has not gained anything, but lost instead. Dummy loads and Isobaric cabs are not real solutions.

Have you considered just using an OD (maybe Distortion) pedal?
Got one. I was just showing a way to have a 312. And if one did do that, an option would be to have different tonal properties on one amp. I essentially do this now with a power amp and two pres. Gives far more tonal variation. Also can get complex and right now I am preferring simple, which is why I am abandoning the power amp/ double pre setup.
But back to the 3 12's. I haven't seen a cleaner suggestion than the two amps (includes stereo power amp) to achieve the 3 12 setup. I agreed it would be easier to do the 2 15's and personally would/do like the sound.

Ah, perfect timing. No, I just went and deleted that post. Look, I know all of jack diddly about electronics, and I won't claim to have anybody's solution. I know so little, in fact, that I couldn't tell you whether a 3x12 with a fourth dummy load was a "turd sandwich" or not. I was just asking about a way to achieve the OP's stated specs. So pulling out terms like "crack brained," etc., is uncharitable.

So, I apologize for getting out of joint, and I apologize for suggesting a bad idea. Any chance I had of learning anything from this thread is long gone, however, so I'll just say thanks and move along.

I had an old Ampeg 50dl that had the clamshelled 15s underneath. It had some earthshakin' lows. the angle 2x10s did not match and the overall effect was terrible but the low end was incredible.

Well I'm sure Mr. Oatman can put him on the right path if he asks to get it spec'd at LDS again.

The issue is, unless he has a stock of custom drivers, it wont be possible. I would bet you $1 that any 312 cab offered by lds, regardless of what the impedance is claimed to be, will end up being three 16Ohm drivers run in parallel for a 5.33 Ohm impedance.

He has a history of telling people one thing, and delivering another. If one orders a 4 Ohm 312 from him, or 610, they are going to get a 5.33 Ohm cab.
That's often true. Don does build nice stuff IF the customer has done his homework beforehand & knows what he's asking for is a good design. His fit & finish are always top-notch. When things are left un-spec'ed, though, that's when "builder's liberties" can be taken. And you're right, even when things are agreed upon, there can still be "builder's liberties" taken.
