as a longtime CS player, UT2004 is simply the best online fps out there... buy it! crap, I will sell you MY copy, just so you will have one!
and definately try out the Neverwinter Nights series... great game, lts of detail, and hours of play.....

Hmmmm.

In a few months, definitley check out Half-Life 2, Doom 3, and Stalker. Those should rock.

As it's been said before, while very dated, Half-Life is a good bet due to all the popular mods for it. It can be found cheap for $10. My top picks are Natural-Seletion, (excellent, excellent FPS/RTS hybrid) and Day of Defeat. CS is a great social game, (lan parties, playing with your friends etc) because everyone has it.

Warcraft 3 is also something to check out. If you have a good system, then check out Farcry. (for singleplayer)
