Need a portable cab to replace a 4x10

I have 3 4x10's and would like to find a great sounding, portable (light) cab for smaller gigs. My main rig is a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 through an Epifani NYC 4x10 (100lbs). Looking for a single 15 or possibly a 2x10 or 12. What do you recommend?

What is your budget, volume requirements, and tonal goals?

There are a lot of great small cabs out there, but we need some info to narrow it down.

Price in not really a consideration as much as quality. I am looking for a used cab vs. new. With my amp running 500w/8 ohms and 900w/ 4 ohms I do not want to blow out the drivers. I like a full, dark sound and play mainly classic rock and in Church. I would probably use this as a back-line and DI out of my GB to the PA if more volume was needed. I will be selling an Ampeg Classic 4x10 to help fund this. If I had to give a price range I would say $400-$700 would be my preferred range.

I would find/buy a greenboy bassic 15 with the Faital pro driver, or find a alpha 12/6.

IMO

Any 15 with the mentioned 15PR400 or an Eminence Kappa Lite 3015. An Eminence Delta Lite II 2515 (although a notch below the two drivers above) would get the job done, too. Or a 15/6 with the Eminence 3015LF.

A 112 with an Eminence 3012HO (definitely), or a Faital Pro 12PR300, 12PR310, 12FH500, or 12FH510 would almost surely work for you as well. Or a 12/6 with the Eminence 3012LF.

Keep a close eye on the TalkBass classifieds. They aren't available every day, but neither are they uncommon.

I use an Avatar B210 Neo with my Shuttle 9.0. A great match IMHO. It's the 8 ohm version in case I want to add another 210 for larger venues. The cab weighs around 45 lbs. according to their web site.

Check out Schroeder cabs. The a 4ohm 1215L is 30-40lbs and handles 800watts. I've got another one of their cabs and have been loving them for the past 4-5 years. They also have a single 15 cab, but I forget the specs. Check the site. You can even get wheels and a fold out handle.

I would avoid the pairing of the 9.0 and the schroeder cabs. Both the cabs and the OP's particular amp are not huge down low. I would see that pairing as too little of a good thing. I would think the streamliner pairing better the schroeder cabs.

I had to check it out to see how they were doing a 1215 cab under 40 pounds... and their website says 48 pounds. Still a very impressive SPL-to-weight ratio.

There are plenty of options for you to chose from.

Thunderchild

Schroeder

Bergantino

Barefaced

Fearful (Greenboy)

Baer

And the newcomers . . .

XSonics

Glasstone

Last but not least, you have the bigger companies which have also joined the light, compact and loud trend. Of those, I would go for GK, though I'd have to say that the boutique builders are a better option IMO.

I personally own an Schroeder 1212R that weighs just over 50lbs (ceramic drivers) and handles a ridiculous 1,000 watts which has worked incredibly well for me. It is very 'midrangey' but sits extremely well in the mix and makes guitarists nervous.

Ah. Good point. I know nothing of his amp. And the Schroeders are definitely good on the high end. Even the 15s aren't voiced all that low. Still nice cabs.
