Need a portable recorder

I just joined a band that does originals. They dont have a Demo so I'll have to learn the songs at practice. Is there a small recorder I can take to practice to record the songs and get a general sound I can practice to at home?

Zoom product is wonderful. I have an old H4, no moving parts, Sounds terrific H2, H1 or D3 (adds video capability) are all great products.

A digital recorder is one of those things every musician must have, along with a stereo system and a metronome.IMO

My H2 is mics only. There is a three position switch to pad down inputs. It seems to be able to handle pretty loud sources. I don't know if I'd be thrilled with the results in a small practice room with a very loud band.

I'm thrilled with it, though.

We have a Zoom H1 and I've recorded my wife's last few orchestra concerts with it. The sound is phenomenal and the price can't be beat.

My daughter sings in a choral group at college. We went to a perfomance a couple of weeks ago. I stuck the H1 in my pocket just in case. We found seats center/middle of the hall. I simply put the recorder on the arm of my chair and turned it on. I was super impressed by the recording capability of this little gem. The recording sounded like what I experienced. I thanked my wife again for giving it to me. Simply awesome for the money.

How do all of these little recorders work at high volume levels? Can you plug them into the board?

I have a Tascam DR-1 which I highly recommend. Mine has a line in for a mini stereo so you could run it off of a board. You might need an adapter. It also has a limiter and an input volume switch so you can set the recording volume below peak. I don't know if that works with the line in, but you should be able to control the volume at the board. If you want to hear an example go to https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=207503069283141 This was my band last night recorder placed on window sill behind amp, so quality probably could have been better with better placement.
