It's easy to change the tube. The body unscrews, you loosen the plastic retainer holding the tube in the socket then you gently rock the tube in a circle, like you are stirring, while pulling it out. Align the pins of your new tube, push it in then reassemble.

That is where I source my tubes for preamps and mics. Give them a call and they could recommend a suitable replacement.

Any particular reason you are changing the tube? The reason i aask is you will have choices of valve voicing. When I changed mine (have 2 consecutively numbered k2s) I wanted flat, clear and articulate and went with Nos telefunken pcc88s. These extended the top and bottom end response and tightened up transient response. This isn't ideal for recording voices as timber changes when singers move octaves which would lead to post correction, usually with a multiband compressor. I have other mics that I use for vocals. I love the k2 on urb. Really love it.

I'm going to try the Rode NTK for recording the upright. I'll see what the Sov Tek 6922s sound like, and see if it's what I'm looking for: the maybe impossible to obtain, Neuman sound, at a Rode price point by changing to a different tube like the Telefunken. I'll post up the results soon.

Hey, the early production ntks came with a 6922 sovtek tube. They later started using the chinese tubes. You may want to check your mic before you order one. Also, many folks chose other tubes to swap out that sovtek.

I changed the stock tube in the Rode NTK and it was not a so-tek. It actually was a disappointment, but then I changed it out to a Telefunkken (platinum grade, cry treated $147. ) and it was suddenly a different mic after a 2 day burn-in. Expensive, but worth the difference in sound quality. Truer acoustic sound on upright and lush warm vocals. For the price, not a bad tool for the home studio on a budget. Thanks to all for the advice!

Is the K2 that much better than the NTK?

I demoed a k when they were released and really liked it. I needed multi-pattern though and my supplier had 2 consecutively serial k2s and he swung me a deal. From reviews, the k2 has been favored over the k. I wouldn't sweat it though. Here, the k2s are used in almost every session here as overheads for drums, acoustics, voices if it works.. a great all arounder here. Distant to close micing. Great mics, home studio or not!
