Need advice on rig upgrade please...

I currently play the following:

Peavey Fire Bass 700 head
Robert Keeley 4 knob compressor pedal
Line 6 Bass Pod XT live
Peavey 4x10
Peavey 1x15

Basses I play are:

Brian Moore I5
various Ibanez Prestige SR 4-5 strings.

What I want to know is if advice on how to get a tight thick punch. I mostly play rock but have a heavy pop slap influence and the 'punch' is very important to me.

Any tips on an amp upgrade?

you're going to get plenty of us on here pushing our favorites... so let me be the first to do it. :D

i saw you post in the ampeg thread and asking about solid state ampegs. honestly, when i read this post my mind automatically when to gallien-krueger. they have great punch. they are great for all styles but i think they do amazing in "rock" genres. and they can give you a good top end bite, while retaining a good low end, if you need it for any slapping. i'd give a gk a try.

before i go giving specific models to try out... there's some more info people are going to be asking for... how much do you have to spend? are you looking new or can you go used? what size places are you playing? any info like that is helpful.

good luck. looking for the amp that gives you your tone can be frustrating but it's so fun once you've found it.

What do you mean when you say "punch?" It's a very vague term. Everyone has a different idea of what that means.


As for a 10-year life on new equipment, that's unlikely. Look back to the late 90s and you'll see no lightweight amp heads. No neo cabs. The industry doesn't stand still.

And, in 10 years, your playing style and band situation will be different. For example, most bassists playing loud distorted rock today will not be doing so at age 35---even if the genre is still popular. Out goes the distortion, the need for tons of volume, and the fridge that you won't want to lift.

Buy what you need for the next couple of years. Don't try to invest for decades.

Harry, my sound is loud but I dont seem to get the mids or highs right.
700 watts at 2 ohms pushes a lot of energy but I am not finding the sweet spot, almost like when the bass sounds like a low note on a Grand Piano.

Well in my humble opinion, if you can't get the mids/highs right then you should stay away from Ampeg. (note I played Ampeg for 20 years).
