need consultation on first pedal + accessories

i just saw that it was "multi effect" and heard that it was a good place to start. is a bunch of different reverb effects bad?

Just buy a bass preamp for now and just experiment on the sounds then add more stuff later.

Reverb is maybe an odd duck to start with on bass (I’m personally not a fan of ambient effects on bass), but I don’t know what your goals are. When you see the suggestion of a multi-effect, what is really being recommended is something with a wide variety of effect types, so you can explore them and get an idea for what you like and what you don’t, something more like a Zoom MS60B or some such.

Also, a warning: if you’re worried about cost, then get out of this forum while you still can. Run, don’t walk. This place is a money pit. A tremendously fun and inspiring money pit.

Are you at all a computer person? Maybe try recording your bass with Garageband (or whatever) and play around with the free plugins in the DAW. This will help you figure out what kind of effects you like, so you can spend your pedal money wisely!
