Need help from prog-geek bassists

How bout "the lights in the sky" or "cosmic highway" by les claypools frog brigade. both great tunes, wit some great leading bass them.

Jeff Berlin has some good stuff that might work... and he's a devoted 4-stringer. I'm in the middle of transcribing "Joe Frazier" off one of Bill Bruford's albums. Bass doubles the melody and has a couple tasty solos.

Opening lines to Close to the Edge

The Fish is mostly bass tracks, and there's a ton of them there

Starship Trooper, the Disillusion part has a really good bass line

Siberian Khatru has some easy, but cool appregiated chordal stuff towards the end of it

Tempest Fugit has a catchy bass line

Are you looking to do a song in its entirety or a mix of a few songs?

The Fish by Yes was the first thing to come to mind, but that would likely require a looping pedal of some kind. I tried learning it with my guitarist's looper one time, but I lost interest pretty fast.

Ditto. I think of a ton of it is improvised when he does it live. I think it could be done pretty easily with a looper, though. Also, I think, as evidenced by the following video, that it can only be properly played with a big flowing cape/jacket. I hope you don't look too goofy wearing one while performing, but them's the breaks...

Sweet, always thought of Berlin as a more Jazz fusion kinda guy... What kinda albums/songs would you say are more on the prog side? Joe Frazier is sounding pretty sweet actually!


I've started learning Ytse Jam, not sure if I'll be able to play all of it though at this time... After about 4 minutes it starts getting way ahead of me! Definately need to get back into a practice routine!

I would agree... he typically falls more on the jazz or fusion end, though Master Strokes from Bill Bruford (which includes "Joe Frazier") seems to me to fall more under the prog category.

I'm stuggling to find transcriptions of YYZ, does anyone know of any? Tab would do and maybe youtube video if its really accurate.

YYZ transc. and tabs are everywhere, I've got one in a Rush songbook and another in an old Guitar magazine issue from looooong ago. You should be able to google it, or most music shops have Rush books. As for a youtube vid, I find this guy does the best Geddy bass covers:

Sorry to bump this again!

Yeah I've been learning from the video above, sorta lost patience with it though, the guy has made a very useful tutorial, I just hate learning from videos.

Joe Frazier is well on its way though, if anyone's interested a transcription can be found here www.stuartclayton.com (the site is apparently down right now but it should be back soon).

I think I still need to chose a couple more songs. Should I start digging through Jethro Tull tracks?
