Hi, I have always wanted to play the bass. I recently purchased my first one. It is an ESP LTD DF-404. It has a 35" scale and is set up from factory with the strings 130, 110, 90, 70. B E A D. I wasnt sure about the diff between a regular 4 string and this low b setup when I bought it. My question is this, Should I try to learn on this or try a regular eadg 4 string bass and sell this one. I cant tune this to eadg without changing the nut. Any suggestions would be very appreciated as I am in this to truly learn to play the bass. Thanks, Steve

I have restrung a 5 string from BEADG-EADGC and had no problem at all with the nut so it should not be a problem for you.
+1. You can get super long strings. 34" scale basses with string thru body design often require super long scale, as if they were a 35" scale bass. I use super long 40-95 gauge strings tuned EADG.
Sounds like a restring then. I appreciate the advice. I am sure I can put together a set that will fit the nut close to the slot width for eadg.
A standard .105 set will work just fine. You are placing more importance on .025 variance than is necessary.
I used to have a 5th that had a nut cut for B-G and I strung it E-C with no real problems. I also happened to use light guage strings, so yours will be fine.
