Need some help on a 2nd bass...

So, I'm pretty fed up with my crappy squier affinity precision, and I have about $400 saved up. I play punk mostly, like Rancid, Less Than Jake, Operaton Ivy, bands like that. I do plan on moving to slapping styles in a year or two.

I've kind of been on the edge between A standard P-Bass, the SBMM ray34, SBMM SB14. I've also been interested with a hoppus bass, i've heard it's good for punk.

The precision is $550
Ray34 $689
SB14 $600

So, yeah, give me some advice...

The way I look at it is you have two options..Buy a new bass,or fix what you don't like about yours..$400 is plenty for some good upgrades..

In fact,I just posted in another thread about assembling this for about what you have in your budget.

Sq. VM body
Sq. Affinity neck
MIA pups/guts
Threaded-barrel bridge
..plus the 'just for looks' parts..creme pup cover, bridge cover, tort guard...Sounds/looks awesome,a lot of bass for LESS than 4 bills!

A P-bass would be good, or something with an P/J style pickup configuration so that you can still slap and pop but have that gritty punk sound.

I would suggest keep saving, and trade your affinity toward whatever bass speaks to you...and don't settle! Never rush out and buy an instrument because you think it will be better than what you've got. You can always make do with what you have...play more and think less about your gear until you walk into a store and play the bass you *must* come home with. In the meantime you've saved up enough cash that you can actually do so! :) .
