Double Bass Need spirocore 3885 mittle string gauges please.

This is what we measured at Gollihur, with a relatively inexpensive set of digital calipers:

Spirocore 3885 med/mittel 3/4 E: 0.114 A: 0.080 D: 0.062 G: 0.051

Spirocore S42 med/mittel 4/4 E: 0.110 A: 0.082 D: 0.068 G: 0.051

That seems like a credible enough answer unless TI will say.

Spirocore 3885 med/mittel 3/4 E: 0.114 A: 0.080 D: 0.062 G: 0.051

Spirocore S42 med/mittel 4/4 E: 0.110 A: 0.082 D: 0.068 G: 0.051

Really interesting numbers, though:

3/4 E string significantly larger than the 4/4 E

4/4 A and D larger than the 3/4s

Gs are the same.

There is so much that I don't understand about the physics of string sets.

The S42M G is thicker, but lower tension than the 3885W G.

I think they have several different metals involved between the core, outer winding and intermediate windings (I'm sure I've seen something copper coloured glinting through a kinked outer wrap). So I presume they can tweak the mass and resulting tension at a given thickness by varying the proportions of those elements.

@stefaniw80401 - if you're still wondering about this and haven't already answered it on your bass...

I have used both mittel 4/4 and weich 3/4. The E strings are about the same on a 41.xx string. They are so close that it's not worth buying one vs the other to find out (on that bass). Once you commit to the 3/4, go ahead and buy the whole set. But you don't need to buy the E to try it. They're about the same. The 4/4 will give you a very similar thing. The 3/4 is a touch lighter and faster.

The 3/4W are a bit less elastic, which respond faster and seem to project better, particularly on the shorter string basses. The 3/4w are actually the best I've tried on my 41.xx hybrid bass.

On longer strings 42.xx I still prefer the slightly lower tension of the 3/4W. They even work on my 42.375 string as well, and play nice with the 4/4W extension E.
