Need to do a fast refinish!

Oil generally requires no clearcoat and in most cases, a clearcoat may not adhere once you oil it.

In all honesty, I speak from my rear end. I've painted several guitars and basses but never oiled or stained one.

If time allows, wait for someone who isn't a lunkhead to respond or try the Luthier's Corner.

It sounds like you're in a real hurry.

Why the hurry? This sounds like those guys who steal cars and change the look of them quickly to hide that fact.

Then prepare for the possibility that it's not going to come out as nice as you might want it to. Hurrying a finish job is ill advised.

I'm tired of redoing the tung oil finish on one of my basses and have been pondering applying a poly clear coat.

Put it back together and play it as is. . What besides it being your only bass and having to play some where in a few hours makes you not able to wait for primer and paint to dry?

Can't speak to a guitar, but we had some trim work done here a while back with a min wax stain. Went on easy, seems to have not needed sanding, and was dry in a few hours

Some sort of clear coat should be applied to a stain, really.

Tru-oil is the best and easiest solution.....many luthiers use it and its easy to apply and dries fast...plus you can build up coats unlike other oils.
