Geez......75lbs per speaker?? Are the stands extra heavy duty?? I feel bad for your soundman if he has to put them on the stands! That's insane!

Need Two New PA Speakers

You're obviously going to get all sorts of advice with most of it being pretty good -if it was me looking to simply replace a pair of older, heavy speakers I'd get (4) Carvin PM-12's. Because Carvin sells a simple double speaker unit (put's 2 speakers in a side to side set up for $20) you could have two of their PM-12's per side which would sound much more full then a single 'traditional' 15" 2-way design. When looking at your budget you'd have over $2000 left plus fairly lightweight modular weather resistant cabs that sound great
You did very well to purchase those 3-way EAW boxes. That said if you're running 4 of them you need to pay special attention to placement and horizontal dispersion as you can run into all sorts of comb filtering problems when you array speakers horizontally that aren't specifically designed for that purpose (which 99% aren't).
I bought a couple Carvin LSx12's in mint condition. Great speakers and lightweight. I think I would have gone the Carvin route myself. Not the PM-12's though!

I don't know anything about the OPs band but I would imagine they are a little further up the food chain than most the guys posting on here since they had 3K for speakers and a dedicated soundman. That is why I wonder what people are thinking when they are suggesting cheap speakers. That is the most important part of the PA.
We dumped our heavy gear last month. We were lugging around all this gear yet rarely play a room larger than 300 people.

Aside from playing in a band I run sound and do commercial audio consulting, it's interesting in the 20 or so blind audio shootouts I've been exposed to over the last 30 years how much of what supposedly is inferior actually sounds pretty good and occasionally beats out expensive boutique equipment -the end result is that it's all about helping people to save money while maintaining good fidelity, in the case of the individual looking for new mains there's a few things that are pretty clear; the economy is shakey at best so saving money factors into this, they're not young kids, have seperate subs plus have plenty of exsisting power to run the mains -clearly this points towards something with relatively flat frequency response from 100 hz and up and no back breaking weight, the fact that there are speakers that meet these criteria that are inexpensive should be looked at as a good thing, of course if you're not aware of the differences between like priced products I guess I can see why you'd lump them all together.
Bottom line is . . . we paid too much for most excellent speakers? Nah . . . we all have quality instruments, why shouldn't we kinda match our PA speakers? The mains should be a priority #1, then quality mics next, which we also picked up quite a few of them yesterday.
Our bottom line was how it sounded to our ears . . . not the budget, though it was limited - we invested in our business. Second was the speakers had to have at least 100 degrees of dispersion. Third they had to be three-way. Fourth, weight . . . 75 pounds is not heavy . . . I'm the bassist, and my bass rig is 2 1/2 times the EAW's weight- I'm used to the weight. Fifth, we wanted a good warranty, and we do - 6 years. Sixth, we can return them within 10 days if we change our minds.
We hooked them up yesterday . . . two as mains and two as stage fill as suggested by the dealer . . . nobody needed their IEMs, nor floor monitors, as we removed them all. The sound on stage was incredible and way less noisy. The sound was absolutely outstanding. We removed one sub, and will do with only one sub for now. Ran everything flat, then we EQ'd hem . . . didn't take much . . .
I think we made a great choice!

EAW is about as good as it gets. I had a couple JFX590s and SBX220 subs. I sold them because of the weight. The JFX590s were 80 pounds each and the subs were 105 pounds. I bought JBL PRX powered mains and subs to replace them. The mains are 36 pounds and the subs are 80 pounds. And I don't have to lug a hundred pounds of amps with them. The difference in sound quality isn't significant.
With $3K I would've bought four of the light-weight JBL PRX or QSC powered speakers.

JBL CBT 70J-1 (in Black) Line Array column were our second choice, but only two of them . . . we just thought that they lacked the bottom mid range for our tastes, but they were very detailed . . . and 54 pounds lighter . . .
I have some Powered EAWs NT59s tops and NTS22 subs that cost me about $11,000.00 and that was 40% off of list price. I also own a pair PRX 535s and 4-PRX 512ms.
I agree with you and have in the recent past given simular advice only to get the same type of angry response -why anyone would start crap with others here is hard to grasp -especially when they're only trying to help save someone money. Of course he picks fights somewhat regularly so there's a possibility he's a disgruntled fool. Anyway thanks for trying and have a great day.

Hi ya sweetie! ...now as you might have heard some of us are here to have reasonable discussion and offer help in any way shape or form however when you come in with your 'interesting' attitude it really hurts us and I'm sure you don't really want to keep hurting your fellow bassists, just know that we're here for you and understand you have 'issues'. The only thing I would ask of you (as a favor) is to consider going back on those pills that help you to stay calm -I'm sure anyone (including pets) in your household would be as grateful as we would be. well maybe one of these days you will figure out that when someone has 3k to spend on speakers that maybe they actually care about how their band sounds. In this thread and another one right now you recommend cheap Carvin speakers. It didn't take rocket science to figure out in the other thread that the guy didn't want cheap junk either. But I'm sure your band sounds wonderful.

lol -thanks sweetie (we actually do)....and I promise I won't say anything about how ridiculous it is that we use Radian 850-PB's for highs while your expensive tops use lesser drivers (your secret is safe with me) Sleep well dear, you're going to need all your energy to deal with those block headed buffoons that don't know nearly as much as you. xoxoxo
