Thinking about getting one for school this Fall. I already have a decent desktop, but having a netbook to take notes on in class would be stellar.

Netbooks... who's got one?

I see two more places today that have the EEE for $150: woot.com has it refurbed with 4GB SSD. Zipzoomfly has one with 8GB SSD and I don't think it's refurb but I only glanced quickly. If these prices get any lower I may have to get one even if it IS redundant of my iPhone!

Here's another satisfied owner of an Acer Aspire One (XP version). It's been extremely convenient for casual computing and writing on the move. With an external 500Gb pocket HDD and a tiny speaker/subwoofer system it's also great as a jukebox for after-gig parties back at the hotel.

Yeah, there are new netbooks coming out later this year with a more powerful chipset, which I look forward to. As for the audio inputs, I wouldn't use them, but you can get a nice USB audio interface pretty cheaply.
I have an Aspire One, and i like it a lot in spite of the trackpad, which I really dislike--maybe I'll get used to it, though. Anyway, I'm thinking of loading it up with VSTs and drum samples and leaving it pretty much hooked up to my e-drums.
After looking at them, I don't see how they would be any more convenient than my 13" macbook. To each his own, I guess.

Yup, and I do regularly. Mine (and most that I've seen) have a VGA port and a few USB ports so that's the screen and any wireless keyboard/mouse combo sorted. There's no PS2 ports though, so older keys/mice wont work.
My physical desk has my desktop pc as well as a 19" plasma TV and an external HDD that has some of my backups on it. With the plugging in of 3 cables the Eee becomes a 1TB desktop with a 19" screen and external keyboard and mouse.
To all those considering a netbook. Don't go for less than the Atom processor. I have a 900MHz Celeron and, whilst its adequate, those Atoms are in a different league. There's the screen to think about too, whilst screen size is a matter of personal preference, some of the 7-9" models have a smaller resolution than 1024 wide, which means you'll have to scroll sideways on EVERY web page.
Thanks for the heads up, I got one coming from zzf. I paid extra for the 2 day fedex shipping and am not impressed it took them an additional 2 days to drop it off to ship...but it should be here friday. What a great deal!
Now another dumb question. Do the Windows notebook come with an OS disk? I'd like to give Linux a whirl, but would first want to know that I could re-install Windows in case Linux doesn't do everything I need. Or, maybe dual-boot.
They should, but in case they don't, you can pretty easily download a Win XP from the web and install it with a USB stick. There are plenty of DIY guides around.
The HDD version of the Acer Aspire One comes with XP pre-mounted on a dedicated partition. There is no CD drive. The installation starts automatically when you boot up for the first time, and is repeatable.
I picked up an ASUS EEE 900A from Best Buy for $150 a while back. It serves as a nice toy to tinker with and mod. I would only consider it fully usable after I dumped money into it as stock I found it pretty lacking. I also get good use out of it remote accessing my desktop while I am around the house.
I'd like one. My laptop now is a 17 inch Gateway FX gaming machine. It's not exactly an ultra-portable. A netbook would be a great companion to that system.
