Unfortunately, Mark Warr was diagnosed with cancer a few yrs back. He stepped back from production in 2017 due to the stress from the treatment and surgeries. He started getting better after certain treatments allowed him to "enjoy the better things in life", as he puts it on his [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]blog post.

In 2020, Mark started designing new Warr instruments dubbed "Phoenix" which will be offered "as is" once completed. No production runs or custom, build to order models as he does not want to leave any customers hanging should his health worsen in the middle of a build. There are pictures of concepts of his new instruments on the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], but none have gone up for sale as of yet. Although he has retired his older, classic Warr designs, Mark has put up a page showing off 30 yrs of his classic designs called [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

Cool fact: At one time, Warr offered a traditional bass guitar as well. The designs are very reminiscent of the Hanewinckel Bass body styles.

I spoke to Jim Wright, an amazing Warr guitarist whom started out on Stick, and he informed me that all of the Warrs that he owns were made by Hanewinckel. Jim worked at Warr for few years and knows both Mark and Pete personally. Jim is the guy who directed me to Pete when I had joined a Facebook page in search of a used Warr. He said that I should think of the HTSG as a Warr with a different name, made by the same guy with the latest tech and design upgrades.

I don't know about the basses which Hanewinckel produces, but as far as this touch style instruments go, he is the sole luthier.

Do you (or anyone) know if Pete Hanewinckel is still around? His hguitars.com website looks dormant. I had a fantastic J bass he built in 2004.

Pete's building my instrument.
He had a medical emergency back in Dec but is recovering and has started back up working on the instruments he had in progress. That's all I know.

Back in Nov of '24, I contacted Pete Hanewinckel about building me a touch style guitar. Pete is known for his beautiful high end boutique basses, but some may not be aware that he was the sole luthier at Warr Guitars from 1991 till 2022.

If so, then it's quite possible Trey Gunn was playing one of Pete's creations when I saw him playing with King Crimson during the mid-90's THRAK tour.
