New 2014 Custom Shop P-Basses

I think this proto seems pretty cool albeit toe-ing the line of being overpriced IMO. I get the Cabronita reference but I think there are a couple key differences (sorry if this is repeat as I didn't take the time to read through all the responses). First, the bridge is a new design from Fender that, based on what I've seen and read, seems to be a very cool alternative to the bent tins of lore. Also the pickups being a blade type would warrant different tones. Lastly, and I recognize the possibility that I am 100% wrong on this, it seems that the pickup placement is different fromt he typical P.... it looks to me like the pickup is slightly closer to the bridge almost in between where J pickups would usually be placed... anyone have any amplifying data on that?

I love the Cabronita and I only own the Squier! I would drop the $$ on the white /white in a heartbeat if possible. I am a sucker for a pretty bass. IMO the other color combos are too much like the standard Cab.

I think the Proto is absolutely gorgeous, but I could build essentially the same thing with Warmoth Parts and order the pickup except I'd tint the neck... May not be "as good" as a Custom Shop, but I doubt I'd notice.... $3,500 is too much for a P-Bass if you look at it from a tool viewpoint... as a commodity to invest in, it may be worth every penny.

Hmmm. I'm not ready. I don't know that I'll ever be ready to drop more than $3,500 on a "custom" instrument made in a big factory that lots of people will have an exact copy of.

Nope, not ready. And I'm OK with that.

Don't get me wrong. Fender makes a lot of instruments that are a good value, assuming you wait for one of the ubiquitous 15-20 percent discounts. The American Standards are a good deal for a Made-in-USA product if you catch them on sale.

But this CS stuff is simply too pricey, even when taking into account diminishing returns. You're paying for the name, the mojo, the vibe, whatever. If you have the money to burn and it makes you happy, then by all means go for it. It's better than a lot of other things you could blow money on for kicks, but it's definitely blowing money.

The Proto's nice but didn't the guys in the Cabronita thread do a bunch of mockups to see how tele pickguards looked on their Cabronitas? Seems you could completely recreate the proto for (give or take) about $800 :confused:

But yeah, white on white all the way :bassist:

The relic '64 looks cool. Gotta say, I would cringe a little every time I ended up with someone asking me how old it was, how long I'd had it, all that. I dig the mojo but I would rather the bass came by it honestly.

Now, if I can find an actual '64 that looks like that...
