New Amp

I have a very low budget so I'm obviously limited to what I can buy bass gear wise, so I've found these two heads which tempt me to buy them. I'm in a covers band so I need something which can change style easily and quickly if needed.

So I've found these two, just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with either of these two:

Line 6:Invalid Link Removed

Behringer:Invalid Link Removed

I DONT WANT ANY BEHRINGER BASHING, KEEP THAT TO YOUSELF, thanks :)

The Line 6 is not a bad amp at all. It is not perfect and it has some "digitalness" to the sound but it will give you quite a few different sounds for your price range and would be fine with a live band setting. I use the smaller 110 for practice everyday.

Noctune:
This is just my 2 cents worth.

Looking at Line 6 website; it appears that the Line 6 has a DSP in the signal path. I would rather have any signal modifiers down at my feet - that I specify - than being forced upon me by the amp. Especially since it appears that you can not disable this signal path.

This would leave "ME" with the Behringer option.

The Line 6 is more of a amp simulator with a power section than a real amp, if I read correctly.

Behringer/Bugera doesn't sound half bad, but they do have a reputation for short-life amps among other stuffs.

I'd look at the Hartke LH-500/HA-3500, if I were you. Low price, good tone, great customer service.

There is nothing on this planet that would influence me to buy a Behringer product... unless Allison Brie showed up naked at my house offering me it.

Seriously, most Behringer products (I've heard the mixers/recording equipment are not bad) are incredibly short lived because the customer expects more from the product. The bass amps in particular advertise their peak wattage, not the RMS (continuous) wattage like literally every single other company. This tricks newer players (who still think that more wattage = better) into buying their products. This is not "Behringer bashing", it's the truth.

Peak wattage is the point where your amplifier will clip/break up/fail, and is NOT a point you want to reach. A 200 watt Behringer product is generally only worth half that, if.

To the OP, I would reccomend the following over either the Behringer or the Line 6:

-Hartke LH3500 (or any LH/HA head)
-GK 700RB-II
-SWR 350(or 550)x
-Peavey Tour 450
-Trace Elliot AH250

All can be had in the sub-$300 range used, either here on talkbass or on craigslist/ebay.

Edit: Actually, I just saw your profile, and it says you have a Peavey Nitrobass rig... are you unsatisfied with that? Going from Nitrobass -> Behringer is not an upgrade by any standard. If you don't like the combination I reccomend changing up the speaker cabinet. The cabinet makes up quite a bit of the tone, and you might like a different combination better. I've gotten great results from using Peavey heads through SWR cabinets, for example.

Happy hunting, and hope this helps!

alecduncan, my cab is perfect for me, a little too heavy but it sounds great, the head just has run its course really, just feel like i need something new, tone wise and such, plus it weighs 60lbs so its rather heavy to carry about each night, im not a harkte and such, i did think about the peavey tour series but too far out my price range cant find a cheap second hand one either

Ah, some people don't like the TX cabinets. I'm not the biggest fan of Peavey amps (love their USA basses) but I still recognize their value. Still, I guarentee you that if you don't like your current head you will HATE the Behringer/Line 6 in comparison.

The Peavey Tour heads pop up on talkbass classifieds every so often:

I definitely encourage going used.

A 60 lb 4x10 is awesome. My Bag End 210 is 90 lbs, 410 is 100+. My old Mesa Diesels were at felt like 60-something each and were only a 210 and 115. My new PF115's are around 50. I'd be jumping for joy if my 410's were that light...

Why the hatred for Hartke?! They make great stuff and have the best customer service I've EVER heard of.

Indeed! If I wasn't using GK and lusting over Aguilar, I'd be using a Hartke HyDrive stack... fantastic tone, versatile, and the company itself impresses me more than any other. No disrespect to Mr. RAG, but the fact that Larry Hartke posts here and gives his personal number to right wrongs is very refreshing.

Quote"Look at getting a Tech 21 Pre amp. They can be had for pretty low cost. Use your current head as a power amp."

This. I use a Zoom B2 as my main tone, using supplied amps from whichever church I'm playing at (I play for several). I can make any rig sound decent, and I get compliments on my tone quite frequently from other musicians and sound engineers.

That being said, if you really want a new head the Line6 really isn't bad at all. I've never played Behringer's bass amps, but I have one of their powered speakers--bought it used, have had it for years, and never had any problems with it.

Larry's customer service blows me away every time. He makes me wish I liked his amps more. I just never could get into the tone, even the Hydrives. :crying:
