New Ampeg Venture Series

Hi Friends, First post after reading almost the whole thread :-)
I‘m a Jazz/Funk Piano Player from Austria, mostly Hammond & Rhodes, but my Great daughter, 15y, Plays Bass: Gibson les Paul Short Scale, and we do payed Gigs, in a Trio with my son, 12y, on drums.
Funky Family. Happy Father.

We tried a Markbass combo - too clean, cold & boring.
Now Venture V3 into Orange OBC 112 (she loooved the Looks :-) , Great on rehearsals&small Gigs, but Not loud/fat enoug on stages.
Better Switch to a „matching“ Venture Cab? 112 or 115? Or a second OBC 112?

Has anybody compared OBC112 with VB112?

Greetings
Ander

If you are interested (different Backline amp here)

Wouldn't it be nice if Ampeg offered a VB-48?

Well, my Venture V7 has been flawless since January, but over the weekend it put itself into protection mode about 1 song into a set of Christmasy surf rock at a local winter fest… drawing questionable AC from the outlet at the open air pavilion is suspect no. 1, as the amp was later the same day flawless again at a country club gig and flawless again next day at my church gig. Relieved, but a little spooked and contemplating a backup amp of some sort to keep with me. Any similar experiences?

Hmmm... Is this the first report of a *potential* failure?
My V12 has been bulletproof since launch, gigging 4-5 x / week. I do keep / transport it in the V12 carry bag, and it goes on a LOT of flights in my suitcase as checked luggage.
I have thought about getting a V3, as a "just in case" measure, but so far, I have no evidence that I would need to.

First report? No, I don’t think so, I’m pretty sure I have seen a few other reports by people claiming their Venture amp “died” on them, but I don’t recall seeing anything about one going into protection mode in a situation, then later working perfectly fine.

Do you mean the 8x8? Yes, it's very nice. I endorse it with all of my heart and soul.
Everything I've said about the VB-88 has been unreservedly positive. But I really should add one caveat: it is a ported cab after all, so if you like the tone and feel of sealed cabs your opinion of it might differ.

I had a ported 2x15 that I wasn't happy with. I figured out what I didn't like about it and bought the VB-88 as an "overkill" fix for the problem, and it did very beautifully fix the problem (because it's tuned below 41Hz), and so confirmed for me my thinking about this. That was gratifying, see? And, oh yeah, it does sound like a good club sound system (practically hifi in the lows).

In my situation I do roll down the lows, and it still sounds great this way (because the lows aren't "broken", but I already ranted enough about that).

YO!

New to bass gear but spent an awful lot of time with plugins and stuff

Favourite bass noise is an Ampeg Tube head screaming in agony right before it explodes.

Unfortunately, I do not have enough money for multiple Tube Heads which I can blow up one after the other like a fireworks display. Also I unfortunately have neighbours. Those selfish bastards don't appreciate the sound of an amplifier about to explode. How dare they?!

ERGO: The Venture 3 looks like a great buy. However I have questions.

#1) I currently have a 1x12 Ampeg SVT Cab. One of these doohickey things:

IMHO: SOUNDS GREAT. Records really well. Doesn't thunder like an 8x10, but it's a great way to get the sound of the bass guitar (and then add the sub bass with a DI or something else later).

Will this Cab work with the Venture 3? (I assume yes, but I see lots of cab discussion in this threat so it seems to be worthy of concern).

#2) I had an Ampeg SVT3. It was aggressively fine. As in it was like the amp was determined to be 7\10 in every way. It never sounded BAD, but the best noise I got out of it was a noise that'd make people go: "Oh yeah. That'll do" rather than: "shag yeaaaaah!" Does this Venture sound like an SVT3?

#3) Obviously nothing short of an actual Tube Ampeg will give you that sound. You're not going to get the visceral feeling from the cab, the smell of burning resistors and the accusatory hum of a tube amp asking what the shag it did to deserve this.

HOWEVER: The Ampeg SVT3 was much too polite and...well...boring to even allow me to pretend that's what was happening. Does the Venture 3 have some actual balls and character? Can I plug a Jazz Bass into it and convincingly play Rage Against The Machine riffs all day? Can I mildly irritate my neighbours with my sloppy bass playing rather than have them call the police (and fire brigade) on my house?
Yes, your 1x12 cab will work fine with the Venture 3. The Venture 3 is more aggressive than an SVT3 and can get gritty enough for RATM riffs.

P.s. I laughed out loud at your comment about the neighbors, I had the same issue in the last place I stayed, thanks to my Snare drums 😅..

COOL

In which case I'll probably do the classic "Edge of breakup" and then push it into proper gain with the OD pedal.

I'll have to go play one in person obviously, but it's good to know that it's worth the effort :)
Yeahhh the “edge of breakup” into OD is exactly how I’d dial it. It really helps to try the head through a couple of cabs in person, at least that’s how I figured out what works best. If you’re in Australia, I'd recommend going with Riffs and Licks :bassist:

Hi! I read a lot of threads and posts about the Venture, but I couldn't find about how it take on dirty pedals. I play stoner and similar and I use ODs, fuzz, etc
I'm thinking about selling my SVT CL...:banghead:I usually play with gain at 8 and a OD almost always on (VT bass by Tech21 and Blumes by EQD). SVT410HLF as a cab, fender P Bass,
Thank you

P.S. I'm interested in particular in the V7. Oh, and any comparison with a Mesa Boogie D800+ or WD800, if possible, would be appreciated...thanks again
P.P.S. Last edit...Anyone has experience also with a GK700rbII? How the V7 behave in terms of volume?

I "touched" a Venture V3 in a store and all I can say is a Mesa D800+ feels like a bulletproof tank in comparison……….

I own a V7 and it works well and is capable of some great sounds and wide range of EQ. Sorry, I don’t play distortion pedals, though. I borrowed a WD800 for a gig and it was nice but I found the top end very attenuated, as if it has a baked in LPF curve making the treble boost excessively subtle. Even dimed, the treble was too polite for me.

It seems that there are plenty of good products out there, they just do what they do and you either like them or not. Try some out!

I picked up a Venture V7 yesterday for a pretty good discount. I am playing a Spector Euro and the cab is a 212av, and I am aiming for a Jason Newsted - Black album or Mike Starr - Dirt type of tone. The V7 does sound great, but the clean channel is too clean, while the SGT on SVT with the grit to minimum is too much overdrive. I am toying with a sansamp in front of the amp, which is closer to what I'm looking for, but I also found that really driving the V7 gain knob to peaking is distorting the input in a sort of pleasing way. Is anyone else doing this, or is it strongly advised to lower the gain until the peak LED is off? Is there any risk of harming something if I am constantly peaking the input? My goal is as simple of a signal chain as I can get, so as few pedals as necessary.

I have thought about going for something like the Fractal AM4 (I have an Axe Fx III) into a power amp as I do love how that sounds, but again trying to keep it as simple as possible. I also have an SVT II that sadly I have not been able to really turn up yet. I know it will be heavenly when I finally do, but also I'd like to avoid moving around the boat anchor to shows and rehearsal.

I read through most of this thread and googled quite a bit but didn't see anything about this, so excuse me if it has been discussed before. Thank you

Well everything you mentioned is an option, but if you like the sound of your gain in the red, it won’t hurt anything. It might make the DI super loud, but I haven’t experimented with the DI yet to know for sure.

I, however, would want the SVT switch on all the time and the SGT with the drive all the way down if you use the gain cranked and run through the DI. Tweeter frequencies and dirt is a solid “no bueno” for me.
