New bass amp/speaker concept

If you can build a cab that can reduce resonance without batting,
I think there might be a small niche market for those.
Perhaps as a house backilne at a showy club, where moving isn't an issue.
Maybe for touring bands that could have amp cases and roadies to move
and hopfully baby them.
I would suggest always including good, padded covers with them.

Meh.. visually striking. Bling for fashion's sake.
Will probably sell well. If the price is achievable by the 20 somethings. Will need to come with a decent cover to protect against abrasions (or a torch and instructions on how to flame polish the finish) as any fish tank owner will attest even soft cotton will put micro scratches in the surface clouding it.
Polycarbonate is very flexible or really brittle when made inflexible (ever snap a cd in half?)
Also FAR heavier than wood alternatives.

Perhaps contact Mr. Scott and get his formula for transparent aluminum.... now those are cabs I'd buy :hyper::smug:

The Internet is a wonderful thing.
Use this material and you have a winner! (Science Fiction becomes Science FACT -- transparent aluminum is REAL!!)

At a store, this would be worth $55 as a battery amp for geetar. $65 if it had clean/distortion channels and dsp effects. Maybe fetch $95 if 1 watt tube powered plus reverb and tremolo. This lit-plexiglass idear would probably be really great at that.

I think it looks cool but the prices are kind of crazy for a product I can't demo in person at the moment. My favorite 4x10 only cost me like $700

I could be misreading the OP's post, but it looks like the intention is to produce the amp/cab setup for that price, with a valve amp of at least 200 watts in a 30x60x15cm case. With the option for a valve amp of up to 500 watts, even though nobody offers one commercially at present.
That's crazy in the other direction, and is just not going to happen.

- You do not operate or advertise a commercial website
- You do not operate or advertise a physical storefront
- You do not individually produce or sell music-related products under a brand name or hold a business license

User-Title Disclosure:

You must fully disclose your affiliation via the "Disclosures" field located on your account's Personal Details page. This is a single line that will appear below your username on all of your posts.

Forum Participation Guildelines and Restrictions:

1) Commercial users must always post in a responsive manner with regards to any product or service they (or any business entity with which they have a current and direct relationship with) sell/manufacture/represent. (Hereafter referred to as "Product" and "Services"). Meaning, discussion contributed on the topic of Products & Services by the commercial user, must be limited to responses to specific questions from TalkBass members, or corrections of misinformation.

NON-Acceptable Posting Behavior:

Commercial users may not...

-- Create new threads about Product/Services
-- Post material referencing Product/Services in general question threads, such as "What is a good bass for me?"
-- Post material referencing Product/Services in general "what's new at..." threads
-- Comment on the products/services/character of competition (unless it is praise or recommendation). Doing so presents conflict-of-interest issues.
-- Post "generic" conversational non-answer posts regarding Product/Services that: praise Product; expand on Product features; are a self 'pat on the back'; are deemed to be part of a pattern of thread-bumping; otherwise contribute additional unsolicited Product information.
-- Post unsolicited photos of Product in the public forums, or submit promotional material (such as, but not limited to, press release text or promotional flyers) in the public forums (email PR to [email protected])

Acceptable Posting Behavior:

-- Commercial users may post an answer to a direct question asked about Product or Services.
-- Commercial users may post corrections of misinformation
-- Commercial users may post reasonable generic conversational-type posts, except when noted below under "Non-Acceptable Posting"
-- Commercial users may post freely in threads not about their own Product/Services, except when noted below

2) Commercial Users who operate as dealers of used equipment, where buying/selling is purely for profit, cannot use the TalkBass Classifieds to advertise items for sale and must instead purchase a subscription to the TalkBass Bazaar. There are no exceptions to this.

Commercial Users who are owners / employees of musical equipment manufacturers / distributors / retailers may not use the TalkBass Classifieds to advertise items for sale, unless prior permission is granted when one of the following is true:
1. You are a manufacturer of musical equipment, and the item in question is not made by your company or a subsidiary. For example, you work for Fender and are selling a Lakland bass.
2. You are a distributor / retailer of goods, and the item in question is not one your company / division usually handles. For example, you work for Guitar Center and are selling an early 80s Aria bass.

An occasional exception to this may be made for individual users (as long as permission is sought before posting in the classifieds, as stated below). For example, you work for a store that sells Fenders, but wish to sell a used Fender instrument personally owned by yourself, on a one-off basis.

These are guideline rules, and not a blanket authorization. Any Commercial User, or any member with a commercial affiliation in their profile disclosure field, must request prior permission for any thread they may wish to start from time to time in the Classifieds section, before posting. These requests will be dealt with on a case by case basis, and any Classifieds thread started by members in the Commercial User category without such permission may be deleted without notice.

To request permission, please contact TalkBass.

I think this might be the better way to go - leave the cabs as is and just do lighted panels that match the music. A lot of bands already have sneeze guards around the drums, why not put them around all the amps as well, and have them do the light show there as well?
I saw a Christian rock show where they did this with clear platforms that the band stood on, it was pretty visually cool

Exceptions

--Threads may be created in order to solicit user input and opinions regarding a product in development.

And there it is-He hasn't made anything yet, has nothing for sale yet, he's just looking for input................ so maybe the exception in the rules might apply? (don't worry I'm sure the route this is going the thread will be be gone tomorrow)

it may look great but it will be impractical, and it won't sound too good either. Plexi scratches easy, it's heavy, and, while it isn't as resonant as wood, sonically speaking it is is very reflective, so the inside of the cabinet will need to be lined with sound deadening material.
If you're just doing it for show, this could be interesting - maybe imbed the LED's into the pexi.

Maybe try clear injected molded plastic, in a non rectangular shape, maybe a ball, that will be less resonant......

Dunwich already has a head with an illuminated clear plexi face.

Polycarbonate will still vibrate w/o bracing. Probably has a resonant frequency that will interfere with the sound as well.

Someone already made a huge backline with clear cabs. I think it was for this guy:

I think you could get the same effect from a transparent face, which would hide bracing and sound absorbing materials inside. I don't understand how you could build and ship these for anything near your asking price though. You'd be broke in a month and there would be another 'DR Bass' thread for non-delivered goods...

Do infinite baffle designs need to have batting?

The dimensions on the 1x cabs don't change from the 1x12 to the 1x15. If you can overcome the sound dampening question, could this solution still apply to the same box for both speakers?

I'd imagine a 500 watt tube amp to get a bit warm in there. It looks like cramped quarters. No worries about the enclosure warping?

There's nothing really very portable about most 4x10 squares. If there's a desire to hit a portable market, why a 4x10?

There's a sweet spot in the ratio of hardness and flexibility. Make something too hard, it becomes increasingly brittle. The hardness of synthetics makes difficulties for creating something that can perform in a speaker system better than wood, for a few reasons. The stuff is just far more brittle than wood. It is harder, and with heavy thicknesses is more rigid. But then there's weight. Wood can absorb a shock that would crack, chip or shatter other materials; and not be structurally compromised. Make a speaker cab out of this polycarbonite and reinforce it, make it lighter or whatever; it still won't hold up to lots of moving around, when compared to a wood box. It may be more durable than some consumer electronic products, but not really any MI gear, no matter the price point, due to it being more brittle than wood, mdf, osb, etc.

The molds for this product would be the key to success. How much do they cost, and how many units is each good for? I would imagine you wouldn't have sharp edges and pointed corners, those would be the first things to chip and crack. You'll need some sort of forming process, if not custom molded panels at some point during the process, no?

I wouldn't be interested in buying one. It would be a very niche thing. Few units, big investment, little profit for the maker.

My $0.02

Very much this. ^^

Depending on the cab design/dimensions, you might be able to get away with just lining something like the back and bottom. An angled baffle will help mitigate some reflection/response wackyness. Would still be able to see the insides from a frontal or off to the side view.

I still wouldn't buy one.

It wouldn't take long to get all scratched up. Would have to at least include some sort of padded cover.

I find, in general, that we players of the bass are a pretty conservative group. I too feel that this concept will only grab onto a small group of players.

When I am on stage I'm not just the bass player but I am a front line performer. When I perform I want the attention of my audience to be focussed on me and certainly not on my amplifier.
