New Bass Day! (pics!)

I've had a couple of big regrets getting rid of music equipment over the years. Up at the top of the list are my black on black two band Stingray that I bought from Dan Lakin with a summer's worth of table bussing money and my candy apple red American Standard Jazz. I was sorta able to right one of those two wrongs with a crazy Craigslist find this weekend.

Behold my ridiculously cheap 1995 mint condition, slept in a case under a bed for the last 14 years, MIA Jazz! The guy even threw in an SWR workingmans 12 combo with the asking price.

Sounds great, growly, smooth, like a good jazz should. I'll probably swap out the pearl PG for a tortoiseshell. Other than that, no need for me to really mess with anything.

how do you like that little mark pv 410 combination?

No complaints, the 4X10 has more bottom end than any I've ever tried. Its very light as well. I got a little buzz out of that goofy looking trim piece running accross the top, so I shoved a couple of shims in the gap between that piece and the top panel and it took care of it. Couldn't beat it for $299 on clearance though. Just wish it were 4ohm.

Question, using this one as an example only - why is it that every Fender I've seen has what seems to be WAY TOO MUCH string wrapped around the tuner(s)? I thought there should only be two or three wraps...

Yeah I laughed when I saw that too, haven't had a chance to swap the old strings out yet. I'm excited to hear it with a set of hi-beams. I'll keep the wraps under control when I put them on. ;)

awesome! your spector is really cool as well man

Thanks! Its a Korean made legend. I bought it off the classifieds here. I can't believe how nice that bass plays every time I pick it up.

I like it, but it seems like the grains dont match. It looks like they glued three pieces together, which is odd for a natural/sunburst finish.

That surprised me a little too, its a little disappointing but I got over it quick. I thought maybe it was pieced together at first with a cheaper body, but all the hardware is right and its got the correct string thru body design for that year.

Nice find!

That's done intentionally on Fenders. Since the headstock does not tilt back and there are no string retainers on the E & A string, the extra wraps all the way down the post are to provide enough tension on the string over nut so you don't get stupid amounts of string rattle, fret buzz, and the likes. It's supposed to be like that on a Fender, especially if the tuners are tapered tuners.

Did you get this on the forums here? There was a guy selling one in NYC here that I was going to pick up for 500-600 bucks but I cant seem to find the thread anymore in the classified. I hope you didnt get it :-(

I have a '97 with a similarly configured body and from experience I bet it matches a lot better in person than in picture. I can barely tell that there is a different grain on mine in person, but when I photograph it the grain shows up and you can see it's 3 pieces:

The 90's Fender basses are sleepers. You can still pick them up at pretty good prices, but they've got an amazing tone and playability.

nice score!
