In December, I purchased a new Gothic bass from an unknown Japanese luthier.

I have since added a 5 string tenor (E-A-D-G-C) by the same luthier:

Are you certain they were made in Japan? Is the hardware Hipshot? I would guess that many Japanese Luthiers would opt for Gotoh.

What else you got in there? EMG pups... maybe Aguilar preamp?

I can only go by the story that the dealer shared with me.

• Hipshot tuners
• Hipshot bridge
• Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp with an active/passive switch and a mid-shift
• EMG pups... not sure which model

Honestly, I play them flat and they sound great!

Yes, that is a PRS Kestrel. I did not like it the first time I played it. I actually opted for the Kingfisher instead. I finally figured out that the bass required a full set up. Once the truss rod, string height, and intonation were adjusted it plays like a dream.

They both play very well, and the tone is identical.

I owned an Ibanez SR1400 and thought the tone of this bass was fatter. It's comfortable, balanced, and truly are my 1 and 2 basses.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

That's sweet. Yeah, I'm a big fan of the low, toneless, bass sound. So, I think I may like this SR1400 better.

Not to be contrary, but what is a "toneless" bass sound? Why would someone NOT want to have a good bass tone?

Like tone knob all the way off kind of sound. No treble. No highs.

The music... Haha definitely sounds like mid-90s. Very strange. Unique.

That's strange because when we recorded that stuff people were freaking out saying it sounded so 70's at the time because of all the Moog and such...those things hadn't come back into vogue yet haha...

Every song is very different; the last song is pretty progressive but also pretty catchy...we even did a "Chips" homage in the middle. BTW...all that stuff is pretty much live, effects and all recorded direct to a Pioneer RT-707 reel to reel. There was no fancy mixing, mastering, or anything. That was the era before computer recording...
