You can get a USA sterling for around that price or less used. I'd go with it. Or there are plenty of used German made Warwicks instead of a Rockbass. That's what I'd go for :) check here or ebay and you'll find them. These are my preferences anyways.
 
They're all quite different basses. I'd say ignore the reviews and get out there and try some. Set aside some time and head over to Bass Direct in Warwick (for our American readers, that's a town rather than a German bass manufaturer!). If there isn't anything there that fits within your budget you'll at least get the chance to play loads of fantastic basses and start to narrow down your requirements in terms of sound and feel.
