My parents said I can get a new bass for a maximum of 600 dollars for Christmas, but this is my only present so it has to be great. I have a squier p bass so i am in need of a new bass. These are my options so far

-Fender Standard Jazz Bass

-Schecter Stiletto Custom 4 Bass

-Schecter Stiletto Studio 4 Bass

-Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4 String Bass

-Rockbass by Warwick Fortress 4 String Bass

-Rockbass by Warwick Corvette Classic 4 String Bass

-Rockbass by Warwick Streamer Standard 4 String Bass

-Spector Legend Classic 4 String Bass

honestly, i'd just say to go for something else, like a very nice amp, because 600 isn't really going to get you a much better guitar. from what i've seen most "good" guitars start at the high $700's to $800's and above.

But I feel with you on the Squier. You outgrow them really fast. As soon as I played another bass I realized how I wanted a new one as the Squiers aren't very good (and the affinity ones are incredibly trashy).

I'd suggest trying out a bunch of basses in a store before making your decision. A $600 jazz bass could be good, for example. Just search around on Musiciansfriend.com until you find a bass that's in your price range and go try it out at a store.

The Fender std Jazz would be my first suggestion. It's THE classic bass world round for a reason.

I have a Rockbass Corvette and it is a good bass but it sounds like a hot jazz bass due to the woods and electronics, it dosen't sound like a german Warwick.

The Stiletto Studio is a very good bass and I would recommend it over the Custom. I have the Elite 5 and really love it.

I would strongly recommend that you get out there and actually play these if you can and make your final decision based on that.

Whatever you decide, good luck and Merry Christmas!

i wholeheartedly disagree.

$600 can get you a WHOLE lot of bass -- one that is a big step up from a Squier. Especially if you buy used. But even new, you could get:

Peavey Grind, Zodiac, or Cirrus
Warwick Rockbass
Yamaha BB4XX
Fender Standard P or J
Tons of different IBanezes (inc ATK)
Epi Allen Woody
G&L Tributes
Schecter 004

YEAH lol going from a squier to a 600 $ bass is great.
You'd get a lot more bass if you bought used especially this time of year.

what kind of music do you play ?

I play almost anything. I play funk (RHCP, Early Jamiroquai),Modern Rock (Incubus, RATM), Classic rock (Led Zeppelin, The Beatles) and a lot more stuff. For this bass, I want a nice growly tone, because i can get a rounder and smoother sound on my squier affinity p bass.

ohh i have no idea how a growl sounds like :P im happy wiht my brice fretless 5 ...that bass is sooo smooth :)

but i heard some ernia balls give a nice growl
try finding a SUB theyre not making them anymore so it may be tough but a LBS might have them , or check Craigslist or KIJIJI

I voted a Rockbass Streamer.

I'd get the two pickup model. They're very very good. The pickup output is a little low, but that's what the gain knob on your amp is for.

I've owned four Rockbasses (Two Streamers, and two Corvettes - one fretted and one fretless).

They've all been great....really great.

The only reason I recommend the Streamer over the Corvette is I feel it balances nicer on a strap. The Corvette body is quite light. Other than that they both sound very nice indeed. The Streamer has a slightly warmer sound than the Corvette.

It's true that the Rockbasses don't sound like German Warwicks. They sound very little like my Bubinga Corvette. They are very nice however in their own right.

In my opinion they eat all of the other basses on your list.

:)

Enjoy.

i think a peavy cirrus bxp might be the best buy for a new bass in that price range.

anther good option would be a lakland 55-01 on the perfect bass' website. with teh talbass discount they arent priced too bad. i think the used market is always the best option though.

If it's growl that you're after, and having played a majority of the basses you have listed, I would go with either the Fender Jazz or the Spector. Those to me are the ones that really growl out of the list.

Have you played all of these basses?

I'd say hold on to the money for a little bit. Go down to your local shop (what ever it may be) and play everything.

I suggest playing a real warwick and seeing how you like it, the Rockbass line doesn't have that German growl because of the woods (no Bubinga, or Weng).

Then come here to the classifieds and pick up something used that you'll love.

You can get a lot for $600 on a used bass.

That's my $.02

Peace
