OP: I second the folks mentioning the Ibby's. I learned to play on several of those and I found the thin necks more comfortable to my hand, especially in the beginning. The soundgear series of 5'ers is priced very well. You get lots of bang-for-your-buck, so to speak. I borrowed an Ibanez SR505 for a few months and it ALMOST converted me entirely to 5-string back in the day.

And then look at how much it will cost to ship it to Mauritius! :D I second the recommendations to look at Spector basses. The Legend line is quite good and should be within your price range. I don't know if they're available in your country. If not, Ibanez and Yamaha both make quality basses.

HEY OTHER TB POSTERS! Please be aware that the OP is in Mauritius, which is off of the coast of Madagascar. This may limit the brands he has access to.

@Vacas, how do you plan on getting this bass? Is there an instrument store that you can go to? Are you planning on ordering it?

Indeed, I didn't see this until later. I'd be really curious about how you get an instrument there as all, as it appears to be about as far away from typical instrument sources as you can get

Have you considered a DI capable of tone shaping. That is how most people 'go direct' to the mixer.
Popular choices are Sans Amp BDDI or Aguilar Tone Hammer. Since you are overseas and respecting your budget I would consider a Behringer Bass Driver DI or the Moen Buffalo Bass DI as affordable options. This allows for all the control and tone colour of an amp, with direct connection and allows you to choose a bass without limiting yourself to active only.
Many players new to bass assume active is better...it isn't...just different. Many a high end bass is passive just as many are active.

Otherwise, it's pretty blown open in that range: anywhere from a Squier VM to a used American Fender. Some ideas to try would be: Squire VM J bass V, Sterling Ray5, Ibanez SG 5, Schecter Stilleto 5, Mexican Fender Jazz V, et cetera...
My advice would be to make a day trip to your biggest local guitar shop, and try every bass you can. This way, you have first hand experience knowing what bass feels good in your hands. Happy searching!:thumbsup:

I doubt Mauritius has the kind of large guitar stores that exist in the US...most places simply don't. While it is great advice for someone who can access a GC or similar...most overseas poster can't. For example, I live in a country of over a billion...in a city of over 20million people...and I would have.to travel 1000km to find a store with more than 6 basses...

If I had to pick a single five string bass to be my only bass I'd probably go with a P/J layout and an active preamp to get the most tone options out of it. There are very few new inexpensive 5 string basses that fit that bill, but one really good selection that nobody has mentioned yet is the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar. It costs about $300 new, is a rock solid bass and can easily fit into any stage setting from both a looks and sound standpoint. Of course that's assuming you actually know what's available in Mauritius. Because I certainly don't.

So maybe it's better to just give him as much unfiltered info as possible and let him decide which brands are not doable where he is? :)
