Considering the location I would look at some of the more "global" brands such as Ibanez or Yamaha. See what the local shops have access to.
I guess not having a large selection of basses available is one trade off for living on a beautiful island in the Pacific Ocean!

If you want more control over your bass tone and volume, you should also invest in a Pre-Amp/DI pedal. Something like a Darkglass B7K, MXR M80 or some kind of Sans Amp.

I mentioned this earlier - but also couched it keeping in mind what those items would sell for in the OPs location - so also suggested behringer or Moen bass DIs...

heck - anything Darkglass in Mauritius would be 60% of his stated budget before even having a bass! A Sans Amp would be around $300 there...

I started out playing on an Ibanez GSR205, a great introduction to bass. Can't go wrong with it. I've owned one since 2003, and I still have it, and still record with it. It's my go to bass. I haven't bought a new 5 string bass since, but multiple 4 strings, so it must be doing something right! So I'd go for an Ibanez variety.
