My point was not to assume something wasn't available where he is unless you knew for sure.
This has probably been said already but check your local listings on Craigslist or a similiar site and see if you can find any deals off or online before deciding.
3-500$ could easily land you a really nice used bass and you could always start with a cheaper but decent bass to then modify to your specific tastes.

I'd go with one of the Ibanez soundgear models. I have an SRT705DX and its worth way more than I paid for in my opinion. I paid $950, but it was brand new back then. Soundgears are very versatile and very high quality.
I'm sorry, but I had no way of knowing until well after my post was made. If that had been specified earlier, we would have all put that information into consideration when typing our posts. We were all just trying to help, and be friendly to a new user.

Of course that's assuming you actually know what's available in Mauritius. Because I certainly don't.
So maybe it's better to just give him as much unfiltered info as possible and let him decide which brands are not doable where he is?

A $1000 US bass in the US will be far more than that almost anywhere else...and in particular in a setting like Mauritius...this just is as it is...
Is it helpful to fill up the thread with suggestions like 'check your Craigslist for a used MIA Peavey' or 'Go spend the day at your local GC'? Just taking a moment to read where he is saves people time for sharing these type of (very helpful in the right setting) suggestions
We all want to help - but part of helping is reading the OP - his location. requirements etc and (imho) responding with relevant suggestions....

It is more a question of cost than availability (you could order just about anything, anywhere in this day and age) - I think it is hard for folks who haven't lived/shopped outside the States to understand the huge chasm between shopping in a large US city or shopping on a tropical island/vacation getaway....heck where I live would have a great deal more access to gear than Mauritius - and we still don't have big GCs to shop at...or anything beyond a small town Mom and Pop shop...we pay more than $1000US for a MIM standard...we don't even get Classic Vibes for less than $600 - and they are made in the next province...
I feel pretty confident that my experiences in various countries, contrasted with my experiences shopping in the US and Canada give me a pretty good idea of the shopping situation there...likely akin to when I was bass shopping on Phuket or in Mindanao
also - a co-worker is building a house in Mauritius and was easily reachable via email.

Also, for $150 less, the TRBX305 has plenty of tone options, I've owned both.

One option you could try is a zoom b3 or even B2 to connect you to the mixer, it will also provide some tonal options.
I don't play 5 strings do can't help but as brands I hear good comments on Yamaha & Ibanez.

I would suggest looking @ the Sire Marcus Miller basses or their Modern style with the hum buckers. I have both and love them. Sounds , build quality is superb!

I was thinking for up to $1,000.00 that gets you a whole lot of either one used. I'm most familiar with the Peavey line, so a nice Millennium or Cirrus USA fiver can be had for that. You'd just need to find a reliable seller, like virtually all who use the Talk Bass classifieds.

In my case I didn't know what was available where he was or what the prices were. So I confined my own answer to some things he might want to be considering when shopping for a 5-string. And when the OP specifically asked me, I told him what I was using and included a disclaimer as to why I'm probably not the best person to make a specific brand/model recommendation.
We answer to the best of our abilities. He liked them both. So I guess he found what I did offer to be useful information.
With regards to what you're paying for an American branded bass despite the fact it's made in the same country you're living in, about the best I can suggest is you hope 'the powers that be' will stop "managing" the currency exchange rate to keep it below its true market value. While it boosts the trade surplus, it also makes things more expensive if you're buying things with yuan renminbi.

I hear you - just providing info from my point of view and how some filtering could be useful.
For the record - I wasn't complaining about the price of items here - just explaining for those who wouldn't be aware of the big discrepancy. These are the sort of things you accept when choosing to live abroad - as for currency management...this is, imho, neither the time or place for that sort of discussion.
If you want more control over your bass tone and volume, you should also invest in a Pre-Amp/DI pedal. Something like a Darkglass B7K, MXR M80 or some kind of Sans Amp.
Check out the Yamaha BB425: P and J all-in-one, great sound, great B-string, great build quality, very friendly priced.
