New Bass

[Modo74]

I just bought a 1979 Ibanez Silver Series P Bass. Anybody know much about them? I've done some digging about on the net but can't find a great deal about them.

Its got a few nicks and dints in the lacquer, hence it only cost me a couple of hundred dollars. Did I get a good deal?

Yeah I had this on my watchlist - was a bit sketched about the whole filing off of the serial number though so didn't bid.

But hopefully it plays nice for you man.

I HAD ONE!!!!

It was one solid and well made bass. Abe Rivera back in the days when he worked out of a guitar store on Long Island did a bunch of mods on it for me. I had it converted to fretless, Abe inlayed ebony lines and poly coated the maple fretboard. He also installed a jazz pickup by the bridge and added a in/out of phase switch.

It was one of my first fretless basses. It sounded great! And like I mentioned above, it was built solid. This bass was one of the "law suit" basses because it was an exact copy of a Fender P-bass, sunburst finish and all! I ended up selling it about 5 years ago. Here is a old photo of it.....

Yeah I would have been a bit more wary had the serial number been filed all the way off, but as the guy said it was still readable, and he provided it as part of the sale information so its all good IMO.

Hopefully it'll play nice, I'm thinking of having it refinished all black and dropping some nice pups in. I'll see how it goes.

I'm not sure if this is the exact same model as the one I've bought already has a J pup at the bridge as well as the P. Unless it was added later as yours was.

Thanks for the info though. I'll wait till I get my hands on it then make a judgement as to what mods I want to make to it.

Its got a few dints in it (and a chunk out of the lacquer about a half inch across just away from the rear strap button) , but overall its in pretty good condition for a bass thats almost 30 years old. Sounds and plays great too!
