I have been looking around here at different threads about basses. The basses that were talked about were either really expensive, or the quality of the bass wasn't very good. What type of bass(other than a fender) can i find that is less than $800, doesn't have many problems with it, and sound good while playing metal?

2nd hand Ibanez SR500 or 505 would really rip it. Or a second hand warwick corvette.
800 is a bit low for a good new bass. Such go around the 1000 to 1200, imo.

If you pick a bass with no physical defects and get it setup properly, it will sound fine, regardless of price. If you want a bass to sound good for metal, play with a pick or clacky fingerstyle.
Look at Ibanez (I like the srx series), Yamaha, Schecter, ESP\LTD, Peavey.

A new Ibanez SR405 should fit just fine. 24 frets, narrow spacing, slim-but-not-paper-thin neck, 34-inch scale, double-split P pickup sets (hidden under soapbar-styled pickup covers).
A new G&L L-2000 Tribute can be easily adjusted to sound great for metal, heck the options with the pick-ups give you such a choice that you could really use it for just about anything, providing you get it set up correctly. But if you planning to down tune a good amount then a ESP 35" scale would always be a good choice for metal as well.
