new cab or new speakers?!

Hey guys! I have a Carvin RL810 that I've had since about '05 and the speakers are going out. I've already replaced 2 and another one is starting to buzz pretty good. So now I am trying to decide if I should just go ahead and replace all the speakers or get a new cab. And if I decide to replace all the speakers, should I stick with the Carvin speakers, or should I get something different? I love the sound of the Carvin cab, so I am leaning towards keeping it and replacing the speakers. Really just here to try to talk it out and listen to any suggestions!

If you conduct any kind of financial cost/benefit analysis, I think you'll find it much more cost-effective to simply replace the entire cab than to replace all eight (8) speakers - depending, of course, upon 1) what you intend to buy in place of it, and 2) your approximate budget for a new cab.

In my opinion, if you like the Carvin Red Line 8x10, there's a very wide range of alternate cabs available to you, that are likely to sound at least as good, and quite possibly much better - depending of course on what kind of budget you have. If you're prepared to replace all eight (8) speakers, I'm guessing you'll have enough cash to invest in a newer, even better cab that will sound every bit as good as the Carvin, and then some.

If I were my father, i'I'd fix something that I like rather than tossing it (unless it has great resale value).
@Mystic Michael has a point for sure.
Maybe the compromise is by replacement speakers in pairs and spread it out over a few months.

Thanks guys! The carvin speakers are $50 each, with shipping, I'm only at 350 to replace the 6 that I haven't already replaced. I do love the look of the full stack of the 8x10 so the only cab I've found that is similarly priced it the acoustic B810, but I've heard very mixed reviews on it. Are there any other brands that would be quality and in a similar price range? I have no problem spending a little more, just can't do $1000.

My first thought was, "Wonder why those speakers are suddenly failing after 10 years?" At 1600w, I doubt if you're suddenly abusing them.

I never thought that UN-abused speakers would reach an End-of-Life span, like an old lawn mower.

I had a Carvin 410 about the same year as yours, and the phrase "Tough as nails" never came to my mind. It always seemed like a "weakling"... sort of like they used $50 speakers in it. Just MHO.

Wonder if you're like me?: I liked its tone, but when I tried other cabs in the big wide world, my jaw dropped, and I was a little embarrassed at what I previously swore was a "can't-be-beat bass loudifier".

I imagine they are failing because I have beat the crap out of the cab and never taken care of it in the slightest. And you are probably right. I love the tone but haven't tried any other cabs. Well I have a 4x10 hartke that is a friend of a friend's and has been at my house for years but sounds like garbage. The only other cab I've tried has been an amleg 6x10 and I was less than impressed, but at the same time, I didn't have time to tweak with the tone very much.

you like the cab ... so you've answered your own question ...

fix as needed ... get a spare or 2 for future use ... keep repairing as needed , i wouldn't scrap what's still working ... if it ain't broke - don't fix it

if you buy a used cab , you might just be buying someone else's problems .. !?

What kind of cab has speakers that can't last 10 years...?

With that kind of quality, I wouldn't put another dime into that cab.

Quite good quality, considering that it has been through 2 floods, dropped down a flight of stairs, slid down several flights of stairs and been dropped out of vans/trailers SEVERAL times. It has been extremely abused since I bought it brand new. Then I ran it with boosted lows while in drop A tuning without a filter (which I now have!). So considering I have beat the absolute crap out of it and it is still in as good of condition and only 2, maybe 3, speakers have gone out, I would say it is a great quality cab and speakers.

I am leaning more towards just replacing the speakers as they go or replacing them all within a few weeks so it will be basically new!
