New Cab???

OK so like 3 months ago i was given a 300watt Univox all tube head and a 2x15 Earth Sound Research cab..the head works fine but the cab is a little...well the speakers are torn and 1 of the cones is cracked. They still work just EXTREMELY distorted.

So i got to thinking would it be cheaper just to buy a new cab or just replace the speakers??

If you think i should replace the cab. What cab do you suggest???

if you think i should replace the speakers. What kind of speakers??

remeber the head is 300watts it can be switched to 2, 4 or 8 ohms

im trying not to spend more then $300

i mainly play Heavy Rock/Metal (more on the heavy rock side) in my band but by myself i like playing Ska and Reggae...along with what i play with my band

I should think that the Eden D210XST cab should be less weight and get the same effect of a 2x15 cab. More than three hundred though.

Hmmm. craigslist has some nice XLT cabs in the 3 bills range.

My suggestion is to find the sound that you like, then emulate it. If you like Sting's sound find out what he is playing on and move that direction.

JMO

there was a peavey 4X10 that i thought about getting cause it was onlt $250 but 400watts :[

If you like your speaker cabinet, then I would get new 15's.

Check these out:

Madison Knights have a deep, dark sound. If you prefer brighter speakers, try something else - or add a midrange driver along with the Knights.

i wouldnt mind getting something else...cause i never really new what it sounded like w/ good speakers cause i was givin it for free and when i got it the speakers were like that.

Could also check out the Eminence Basslites:

These will take a few pounds off your cabinet to boot. Might want to check out the Eminence web site. They have a page of cabinet designs that will help you to see what speakers closely match your cabinet:

http://www.eminence.com/resources_cabinets.asp

Take some internal measurements of your cabinet to determine its volume and port size (if your cabinet is ported). It's not critical, but you might need to modify your port size to get the best performance.

I was gonna suggest the Bergantino NV610 IMHO best cab for a 300w tube head! Then I saw the $300 limit!!!! So Sorry.
2nd hand - I'd suggest 2 cabs-as the amp is switchable 8/4/2 ohms two 8 or 4 ohm cabs-give U HEAPS of options. Possibly a 1 x 15" & a 4x10" or a 2x12" or 2x10" - U can take the 2 for big gigs-MOVE LOTS of air! take the 1x15" for samller gigs etc...

this is pushing my price range but do you think it would work??? it says 200W RMS/400W peak which i dont know what means

I wouldn't. I think you were closer with that $250 Peavey or just replacing the 15's in your current cab. Then you could always add a 1-15". The speakers on that Ampeg would reach distortion before you got all the power from your head. Then, you would be in the same boat you are now with blown speakers.

alright.. but 1. where could i get speakers from 2. do i just go by the wattage of the speakers to know which ones to use so i know i wont blow anything else??

ive been thinking about getting some Black Widows cause this is basically a ripoff peavey and i know some peavey's use Black Widows. I would have to measure the depth/volume of the cab of course

Are you sure the Univox puts out a continuous 300 watts? Which (and how many) output tubes does it have?

If you don't mind moving a big of a speaker cab around, I'd also vote for replacing the woofers, either with Eminence or the Celestions fenderhutz suggested. So many used cabs have tired or completely thrashed woofers, you'd be starting with a clean slate.

1. depends on your location and/or access to credit card to order online. 2. It will never hurt to have speakers rated higher than your amp output. Two 8ohm speakers at lets say 200-300Watts a piece would be just fine. Total 400-600watts.
Most music stores will either have or can order some nice eminence speakers. If you talk to someone thats into cab building, they should be able to determine what speaker works best for your cab by taking measurements for internal volume.
Do you have the ability of measuring your cab's internal volume? If you could provide the volume of your cab, some tech guys could chime in as to what speakers would work best for you.
