New Cort Headless Bass

This bass gets a lot of things right, but not everything. The string retainer at the nut could be better. The MK-1’s are not great. I also miss the days when headless basses didn’t flare out past the nut - the neck just used to end rather than looking like 7/8 of the headstock got sawed off.

Still, I want one.
I also don't care for MK1 electronics, but I disagree with the headstock part. I find Steinberger styles really awkward because there's no physical reminder of where the neck ends. Plus, the flare should allow you to use a guitar hanger.

Still waiting for a 4 string version! Seems weird there's only a 5 right now.

I played a Washburn Bantam headless for years. I still have it, along with a Washburn/Status bass. For me, the flare is just an eyesore. My headless basses have a subtle change in the shape of the neck at the nut, so I know when I’m there.

As far as guitar stands go, I’d have to see one to see if I trust that little bit of flare to a hanger.

I though it interesting they do t have a 4 string, even though I’m interested in the 5.

I get the appeal of the flare, I just don’t like the looks of it. I could live with it though.

I think it's kinda amusing that the green one looks darker than the blackburst. Hope they do this one in some brighter colors in the future. Maybe even bring back that P they did in the 80s.

Actually, MK-1 pickups don't sound bad at all. It's the MK-1 preamp that's trash in my opinion. I would immediately replace it if I bought this bass.
Agreed, I had a Lakland with those pickups and the mk1 pre. As soon as I replaced the pre the bass sounded great. Interestingly, I later upgraded the pickups to some nordstand dual coils and they didn’t work at all with the preamp I had put in!

I got my Cort Space 5 a couple of days ago - I cant believe I got one before they got released in the USA - first time for everything!

TL;DR conclusion - its amazing for the price! Plays well, sounds good, looks good! - seems solid and reliable,

Price $1249 Australian Dollarydoos = US$825

What's it like?

1. - Light - at around 7lbs - that's amazing for a 5 string.

2. - Balanced - sits on your leg with no neck dive.

3. - Fast. - the neck is probably the best part of this bass. Ive owned basses that cost 3 or 4 times this bass and yet this neck puts them to shame. The roasted maple has a satin finish that is so smooth and fast. The neck profile is slightly asymmetric with more thickness on the b string side, and the fretboard is comfortably flat- even my Donald Trump hands can reach the B-String with ease. Frets are well dressed.

4. Sound. Go listen to Patrick Hunter and Nate Navarro put the Space 5 through its paces - its sounds like that - even through my poopy Ampeg BC108. I dont know why people are negative about the mk1 barts or the markbass preamp. I've had basses that cost twice this much and haven't sounded as good.

5. Tuners. Solid. - Dont go out of tune.

6. Hardware. everything looks and feels solid - the only thing I have changed is that I installed Schaller S locks.

7. Paint. I got the green one, its very dark, and very matte. In some photos the dark is purple - it's not purple. (Although the purple maple in the neck is very purple. Did I mention how awesome the neck is?)

8. Knobs and electronics - Knobs feel as solid as. Electronics good.

9 Comes with a nice gig bag - but I'm a hard case guy - the great thing about headless basses is that finding a rifle case on Ebay that will fit is relatively easy!

In the next week I'll have band rehearsal - so I'll be able to try it out in a live context.

Cheers and beers

Finally pulled the trigger on this one. Literally just got this today because it's my birthday and that's a good excuse to tell my wife why i have to get another bass lol.

Been dreaming of getting one ever since it got announced earlier this year and it was everything, I imagined it to be.

Some notes when I got it from the store:
  • When we were testing this bass (last one on stock), the sales rep couldn't get the preamp to work properly. It was cutting out for some reason. Didn't mind it and when I got home, I decided to check out the wiring and turns out the battery connector's solder was loose. It was a quick fix for me. Probably some poor QA on the store's part. I wouldn't blame Cort.
  • As for the setup, I don't know if the store set it up when they got this on stock, but the string height was too much for me. So, I did my own setup: tightened the neck relief, lowered the string height matching everything within the fretboard's radius, and the usual intonation setup.
  • Fret work is good aside from the last high fret on the G string which was causing a dead note. I don't really play notes that high, so I left it as is for now.
  • Once everything was setup how to I wanted it to be, playing this bass feels like a dream. Of course, saying that brings a lot of bias. I actually waited a little while before I actually bought this bass to see if I'm just having GAS again but now, I am sure that I wanted this bass.
