Ugh, that is definitely no bueno. I am months into my first set and still absolutely no issues (finger style, medium to light attack, fretless Jazz, for reference).

If you're still in an experimenting mood, you might try the new La Bella Gold tapewounds...most expressive tapewounds made.Had my A string break at the ball end last night on my Jack Casady bass. Just put them on about a week ago. Just playing as normal and snap! I'm done with Cobalts! First the D string on installation and now this. It's a shame because they sounded incredible on the Casady.View attachment 696233 View attachment 696234

Supposedly...I've read it at quite a few different places...the golds are even brighter than the copper whites.
I've never played any other La Bella tapewounds but a bassist friend of mine really liked my Fender FSR Jazz bass with the golds, he said he'd never heard tapewounds that sounded so good. He was slapping the hell out of them!
I'm buying another set next week.
Perfect! Kindly compare the total tonal growl to the standard Fender 8250 Rounds.

Yup! I broke 2. Call Ernie Ball and tell them you want a new set! When I broke the 1st one they sent me a replacement. When the 2nd one broke I told them I was a bit paranoid about trying them again but they assured me they had fixed the issue. Took about a week to get them though. Good luck! Love the sound but a bit gun shy now!First time, first install... SNAP goes the D string. Groan
They have more growl than any other flat but not quite like grounds. Very close though. When my D string broke, I had a steel round D with these and the difference was barely noticeable.Hi , apologies if this has already been answered, I have not been following this thread and have only just had a look at the thread.
How do these strings sound compared to roundwounds? Are they totally like a roundwound in sound or do they have some of the flatwound thump to them ?
Thats great if you have a tuning peg like a Fender, but if you got a smaller diameter one you have to cut or you will be overlapping wraps which is a no no.Got a quick and cordial response from EB, and they will send replacement string. Kudos to them. They did recommend to not cut these strings. That's rather unusual.
