New EB Cobalt Flats?

Interesting thing from last nights rehearsal. I played both of my Precisions, one strung with Cobalt flats and the other strung with Pure Blues. I really like both sets of strings. The band really liked the Cobalts and asked me to play that bass at Friday's gig. Nice growl and articulation they said. Normally they like whatever I play but this is the first huge "wow" comment from the band members.

I have been using the .040 - .100 gauge chromes for quite a while now and I'm interested in giving these cobalts a shot. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on tension? I'm looking for less, ideally. Should I go with the .045 - .100 gauge set or the lighter one with the .095 E string? Thanks in advance!

I'd suggest the .40-.095 set. The EB sets aren't as tense as Chromes, but I would't call them "very low tension," either. Since you said you want less tension than what you have, the .045-.100 set might be a little stiffer than you're looking for.

I have been using only DR Black Beauties on one of my basses for a couple years. Being in need of a new set, I decided to try the Cobalt Flats on that since I have no 5-ers with flats. My initial impression playing them alone is that they are surprisingly versatile. I am looking forward to hearng them in the band setting at tomorrow night's rehearsal.

This bass has Sperzel locking tuners, so I had to cut the strings. Through the hole, screw down the pin, 2-3 wraps around the (short) peg, bend the tail 90 degrees and snip. DR Strings wrote in their instructions to put the 90 deg. crimp in their strings before cutting, so I always do...

I gigged the Cobalts this weekend. The feedback I got from musicians in the crowd was along the lines of "your bass sounded big, punchy and clear". A couple noted that they could hear every note I played. Of course it was a small room but I did play with two guitars and drums so overall I'm happy with the feedback I got. I'm going to put these on my other Precision.

Still thinking about getting a set of these. For those of you who've been using them for a few months now, how are they wearing in? Is the top end and "round like" punch still there or do they mellow out?
One of the reasons we play flats is that they wear in and then sound great for years. My Chromes have been on my fretless for almost 3 years and still retain the growl in the mids they did after a couple of months.

I have had mine on my P and Ric since May, and the zing has mellowed out quite a bit IMHO however, they are still very meaty and punchy. They just keep sounding better and better to my ears...;)

Good Luck!

Yes less zing now but still have more percussive punch and a few more overtones than other flats.

These strings are definitely flats though in comparison to say GHS Pressurewound or Labella quarter rounds which are unmistakably roundwounds.

Some brands warn you not to; I've not had a problem with Chromes going through body, or the EB rounds I used before. Just wondered if anyone had experience with these.

I have them strung through on my Pbass, no problems. I did break a G on my semi-hollow body with the first set I bought. Probably the early on problems they were having. they did send me a new string though.

They came in today; I strung them through body with no issues. I followed the instructions on how to string them. I think the E and A strings sound perfect, but the D and G are almost too bright to be useable. I might have to do a custom set like I did with Chromes. I mostly like them though.
