Is the difficulty of modding the only downside to SMD? I guess it would make DIY repairs difficult also.

there are probably people out there who say SMD components sound different all things being equal, but I wouldn't claim that. It would make repairs much more difficult as well, not impossible, just more difficult for the average DIYer.

Looks like it's still going to need a 24v adapter, though...:/ bummer.
