OK, some more noodling over lunch break with the new Pyramid strings on the Balor. The black nylon strings pair very well with the carbon fiber body and fingerboard. They take out some of the 'metallic' tone of the body that's more in evidence with with the TI flats. Now I wonder what Labella black tapes would sound like, but I like the velvety feel of the Pyramids too much to be tempted to try. I've found on my other basses that Labella black tapes are sort of in between the sound of TI flats and Pyramid black tapes.
Overall, very pleased with my order. I got the Balor mainly for use as a practice bass, as I find it more motivating to practice acoustically, and I can't really play very loud most of the time anyway. I'm considering putting a little foam on the sound hole to diminish the boominess/resonance and add a little punch and definition. With the Pyramid strings, it's probably about as close to an upright sound as I'm going to get with a six-string acoustic bass guitar, although I haven't tried the Alien six-string. If I were rich, I would have a custom six-string upright made for me but at 34" scale so I could continue to use four-finger technique and play chords.
One thing I would say, if I haven't said it already, is that for a carbon fiber fingerboard, I find Moses necks feel and sound better than the Balor. How much of the sound difference is due to the actual neck and how much is due the fact that my two fretless basses with Moses necks are attached to solid bodies with piezo saddles, I can't say. However, for feel, the Moses necks definitely feel better, 'drier,' less slick, and more articulate, and yet incredibly fast. I haven't tried any other carbon fiber fingerboards, however, so once again, my opinion is quite limited.
