New Emerald carbon fiber ABG - impressive!

Cool, I never got to try them (I do use and love their guitar black nylon tapewounds as the middle strings of my bass VI, and have a new, unused single flat .13 low B I got from the bargain bin of an online store). Could you post your impressions on both types (re tone, feel etc.) here, here or here

I have! I played in a totally acoustic Irish trad group for a while. One guitar, vocals, flute, and violin and it had zero issue cutting through. A full small drum kit gave it a little issue, but it still managed to do the job
Even with a small kit, it takes a really good drummer to keep the volume under control especially when playing acoustic.
The guy was a jazz drummer and mainly used brushes, and I'm sure the room we were in helped a bit too. I wouldn't say it was ideal, but it still worked.
Now, no drums? It totally worked. It sat perfect with two vocals and two guitars as well.
All of this was with flats too, the acousticores kinda dampened it a little (and I'm sure the tapes will a bit as well)
Got my GHS Bronze Pressurewounds with the 5s from BassStringsOnline today, so all set for when mine shows up. Not sure which strings I'll like most on it, always seems to be a kind of "individual quest" to find the sound of each bass...
Looks gorgeous but sounds like the upper mids and treble is cranked. I mean... I get it... itll do much better with temp and humidity changes vs a normal AEB but once youre this far out of the ballpark with tone... why not just use a solid body electric? I just looked it up and it appears to be about $3k so if you want to stay with new over used... youre in the range of a Mike Lull Jazz, a MM HH, the top of the line offerings from Ibanez, and if you go used... you can sneak into Zon, MTD, Roscoe territory... So I guess Im not quite understanding the application.

It's a different sound, more than anything else. I've gone through loads of high end electrics, Foderas, Modulus, Roscoes, Laklands, and Status just to name a few, and my main electric now is a Fender Pino, and this has its place in there. I bought my fretless as a replacement to my Fodera Emperor Elite, and I think it absolutely fills that void in terms of sound and play ability.
I don't necessarily go for that same sound they do, and it achieves what I want from it. It's big and boomy and the notes have an air around them that a solid body just doesn't. I wouldn't call it a compromise at all, just a different flavor!
Luckily, there's plenty of basses so everyone can get what they like!
I'm excited to hear those! So far, I'm really digging the Galli flats but I'm excited for those tapes.
The joy of finding a seven string set in general is going to be fun!
I got to try the Galli tapes in a band context last night, and wow! I don't think those are coming off anytime soon.
Super smooth with this huge fundamental coming through. It just filled the low end in a different way than it did before.
They also seemed to be a little louder acoustically than the flats were.
Worth a look if you like tapes!

Just as a heads up, when I was waiting on my green one, the tracking went just long enough to make me worry a bit in between updates!

I mounted a set of the new GHS Bronze Pressurewounds on my Balor 5 this morning replacing the Chromes that were on it since delivery. I need to put some time on them, but so far I really like them - moderately increased acoustic volume compared to the Chromes with minimal finger noise.
I should be joining the club in 5 more business days.
(Tracking says just hit Heathrow.)
One thing I need to play around with is feedback control. I've found my Balor to be more feedback resistant than my earlier ABGs, but our small practice space is a challenge - especially since my guitarist uses a Tonewood acoustic effects device and usually plugs in. I'm thinking a block of soft black foam rubber sized to sit inside the soundhole with a pull cord to assist removal - I have edge mounted tone and volume controls in the soundhole, so it'll have to be really soft to avoid messing with the cable.
