Double Bass New Evah Pirazzi slap strings from Pirastro!

Pirastro puts the D-string into a much larger envelope because they feel strongly that the particular makeup of the D string could be damaged by coiling it as small as the G string (small enough to put into a standard envelope. So they used a bigger envelope (the original smaller one should be taped to the big one) in all the sets they're shipping out.
From a retail shipper's perspective, it's a real PIA -- but I spoke to the US rep about it. And based on the way they're packaged, I can gently fold the edges of the envelope without further coiling the string, to make them fit into our padded envelopes without risk of damage.

Dear bskts, I know you want strings, I do too, but what I have to tell to you is that: It won`t change before you are Chris Wood, or the dead guy, or someone else. It won`t change f****ng anything, at least for better.
I tried, again, a plain gut D today, the very boutique s**t. In the practise room it`s very Charlie Haden and whatever. In the reality you can`t hear what you`re playing on the D string. I quess this is why all this spiriocre and evan paparazzi exists.
This set would propably be a absolute killer if the D ain`t dead, like they all are. I don`t slap, even when I would love to.

EDIT: A plain gut G is all different story, if you can live the difference in tension. Blends fine sonically with basically anything, EP and Anima and such, IME.

May I ask what you're playing on? Are you using a gut G and if so what kind. Part of me wants to try it the other part is tired of changing strings. Also I'm playing a full set of spiro mediums so I don't know if a plan gut would work with that.
A plain gut G should go fine with Spiro Reds if you're playing mostly pizz. Decent plain gut Gs are a dime a dozen, it's a decent plain gut D that's a pig to find.
I'm thinking tension wise. Would anyone say (quick recommendations, don't wanna derail the thread) which gut G's should work. I keep low tension and am thinking:

I`m back in fourths and trying different combos. I have a full set of EP weichs on now and the problem with EAD + Garbo gut G is the tension difference, at least for me. I like to have my strings at my 106cm ( 41,7" ) mensure bass at minimum 7mm - 10mm height, to get the meat under the strings when plucking. IME a regular tension plain gut G wants more air under it but at 8mm - 11mm the EP weichs become uncomfortable for the left hand. I have experience on Gamut Pistoy medium G, Lenzner G and the Garbo gut G. There was propably something wrong with the Gamut because it didn`t work on any bass I tried it on, but the Lenzner and Velvet are both great strings, Velvet beeing a little higher tension. However, I wouldn`t pair it anymore with anything else than Velvets or some downtuned solos, to get even tension across the strings. Anima EAD + gut G is a great combo. Pirastro should make a non-gut D string for this EP slaps set too
Hmm... I've been rocking Dlugolecki and/or Gamut G & D for years now, coupled with a new Garbo E & A every year. I'm due for a string refresh, perhaps these E & A are worth looking at?
The Slap set is stabilizing for tuning, but the D is still a sonic freak among it's siblings. If the whole set sounded like this D, I would dump them. Maybe just a poor match with this particular instrument? I have a lesson scheduled for next Monday. Will see what my teacher has to say about this D string. He is a gut guy. Also I wrote to Pirastro, they asked me to send the D back. I may do that based on what my teacher recommends.

Kent: Would you recommend the Pirastro E and A slap wound strings and (any) natural gut to a non-slapper who just likes the gut sound... for pizz? Or would it be best to stick with the Garbo or other wound gut E and A /natural guts combo?
Have had these this new slap set on a Kolstein Panormo which responds well to gut in general. Two weeks on. They sound very good and are comfortable under left hand and right, plucked or bowed. The E and A particularly stand out for arco, very easy and big, and the plain D and G bow much like the Gamuts I have had on, with just a little less output than the Gamuts. Well balanced set, and as advertised great for slap and general jazz pizz too. Have not played them amplified yet except one weekend with a little bit of small amp, so it is primarily the acoustic output I am reporting, which is good indeed. Played them on one string quintet piece , and they blended well although I had to watch my volume in the blend, as they can play loud.
Oh and yes I would recommend the E an A from this set with other gut D and G options.They are great low string matches for upper gut, I think wrapped uppers would be fine too.
A non-gut D would be a good option IMHO too. My bass is not great with plain gut D and its the weak point on my current setup. Maybe the Evah Pirazzi Solo E downtuned to orchestral or a Zyex light D would be a good substitute? EP Weich would have too much of a tension step-up in my view

I can only tell you that Adrian at Pirastro told me the E&A have less tension than solo-gauge (regular) Evahs tuned down at orchestra pitch.
That means too floppy for me.
Francois: Thanks! I never liked EP Regs or Weich but I read that the E and A are completely different strings. I was wondering if there as a big difference in diameter between the D and the other strings.
I dunno why I keep doing this to myself!
I was thinking today how great my bass sounds with my Spiro Weich/Zyex med G combination. I guess I am still not completely cured of gut fever......and I likely won't be cured until after Mark Gollihur ships out those darned EP Slaps to me. So far I have resisted the urge but this thread (have to blame someone) is making my resistance weaker by the day.
