I wouldn't use it for jazz, the tone is too big/aggressive for that, although the one I tried was on rounds, so maybe a bit of experimentation with flats would do that. The bridge solo'd sounded like a jazz with some more oomph - kind of as you'd expect. Che bello basso!
I am thinking Fender wanted to give Jazz Bass players an option for getting the P bass sound. All I know is I am back to work this week and I am going to get one come hell or high water
I wonder how the Blacktop Fender P compares to the Schechter Diamond P. Similiar price but the Schechter is MIA.
I played the duel P jazz bass the other day, besides being horribly set up I could tell that it was a big sounding bass, quite dark though. big oomphy sound of a P bass up front and when blended with the rear pickup it had a nice tight growl to it, not too dissimilar to a jazz bass sound but fuller and will less bite more punch, the bridge pickup sounded a lot more P bassy than I expected retaining quite a good amount of thickness esp between the two coils since 1 is closer to the bridge than the other, it's tone can be described as a pinches P bass, a lot tighter with less thickness more weight... kinda like going from a sledge hammer to an ice pick, both will get your attention but one in a bit blunt force power type of way and another in that force being focused into a tighter impact if you get me.
If it was set up well it would have been a nice bass but being a jazz guy I found myself boosting the amps highs and mids to get more bite, something that did yield pleasing thick growls but not a bass I will be buying despite it intriguing me a lot

The oly time I really dig fenders is when they are black, murdered out. Id pick up the pbass$$ if I had the $$
Have Fender ever really offered more beefed-up passive basses than this before? I just like that they're choosing to get outside the box a little bit. neither of these are traditional-style fender basses in terms of the p'ups, but it's at least good of them to try something like this. Hi-mass bridge, too... and it's cheap. MIM Fenders have really been upping their game over the last few years.
Most of the recent Fender new releases have been interesting and seemingly well thought out, IMHO. Better than the offerings I've seen coming from that other big guitar company at least.... (again, a most HO)
