New from GHS: Pressurewound Bronze

Edit: Actually a receipt not an invoice, and this was for a direct ghsstrings order through their web page. Pretty sure I'll be ordering more soon. ;) So will update when they arrive Wednesday.

Well, my experience so far is only with the early prototypes - but I know a little bit - take the best parts of the normal bronze roundwound ABG strings, minus the scratches scrapes and squeaks, and the harsh brittle highs, and you've basically got these - still plenty of treble, but a little tamed over the full rounds.

I have a set in my possession. Now I have to figure out which bass I'm going to try them on (that process may take a month or more) - the likely candidate is a bass I've built but which is being tweaked, and until it's stable, changing strings is just a multi variable exercise which would yield no useful results (yeah - Physicist here, I talk like that).

So, it'll be a while until I have any data. other than...yes, the gauge available looks light, but if you look at the numbers on GHS's tension chart, the tensions are higher than what you'd expect from such light gauges - bronze is typically (there are many alloys of bronze, so this isn't a simple thing) heavier than steel, and assuming it is, you'd need more tension to bring the strings up to pitch. So, don't think too much about the gauge - they're not as "light" as you think.

All that said, I am hoping these give me another sound in the toolbox - I kinda need that to justify (in my mind) the existence of a second P bass in the herd.

This is basically it. They were never meant to be compared to the regular Pressurewound strings, since the main instrument these would go on would be ABGs.

I'll add that tonally, they have more in common with the regular bronze ABG strings than the steel pressurewounds. I love the effect on an ABG, they really really shine, not sure how they'll sound on a solidbody electric, but might be worth a try.

The GHS promo video demos the Bronze Pressurewounds on both a fretted and fretless solid body electric. It's just a short clip. Hoping someone will make more demos available.
Also wondering about the strings flexibility:)

I'll make some recordings with both the prototypes and the new ones this weekend. Interested to see how they compare, expecting the production model alloy tweaks will be a noticeable improvement.

To clarify, the fretless isn't a solid body; the cutout is a giveaway. Plus, the pickups on the fretless are optical with piezo, so it's going to sound a bit closer to what an ABG would sound like. My Willcox fretless 4 and fretted 5 are what I do a lot of prototyping on, since traditional pickups aren't a factor; if the strings don't sound/feel good on those basses, they won't anywhere else.

But yeah, trying to find an ABG that I can grab for a supplemental video.
