New from GHS: Pressurewound Bronze

How do the PWBs sound plugged in using and ABG w/piezo? Has anyone compared the amplified sound to tapes or flats?

On my Furch SW5 ABG compared GHS PWB to:

• TI AcoustiCore/JR, Labella RX nickels, Fisoma 2716, Dogal Hellborg rounds
• TI JF, Labella Gold flats
• Labella Black/Gold-White tapes

Plugged in, there wasnt much difference between similar wraps—ie, the flats sounded similar to other flats, tapes to tapes and rounds to other rounds. All gave basically identical signal strength through the pup. To me, the only discernible difference was in the upper mids and highs, and 'wrap noise'. Shifting on the rounds were more obvious.

I would say most generalities about the strings held true. EB strings on an ABG sounded 'compressed' Though the Hellborgs were stellar (IMO, for my needs)

Any differences in tone via PUP were subtle/'minor' IMO as far as the signal chain, and most differences could be 'tailored'/ compensated for with EQ etc. With the obvious limitations, like ya not gonna make LaB Blacks sound like a bronze string

Making a G string with 2 covers is incredibly tricky. Beefing up the core might be good on paper, but definitely wouldn't work in this scenario. Besides, I liked where the string felt and sounded compared to the others, so decided to leave it there for the time being.




While the NEW offerings of ABG have been 32" scale, the large majority of the ones out there are still 34". Offering them in the latter length FIRST was a better way to go, to see how they'd be received. The former is in the works, as I have a 32" scale Ibanez in the office.




It's night and day. Most of the people that use tapes or flats on an ABG usually aren't going for a forward, brighter tone. So, the Pressurewound Bronze are going to be quite different. They've got that "stereotypical" bronze tone and sheen, with a roundwound attack and sustain. The benefit is that you don't have the overly annoying string noise with them, as compared to other ABG strings.

They were not. I had worked on them for a bit, but it never made it through the whole process.

Wow… thanks for replying! Any risk to using the 34" scale ones for a 32" scale ABG with pin style acoustic bridge? Don't want string breaking. Thanks.

Not to speak for Jon, and I'm sure there's increased risk of breakage or winding unraveling, but Ive cut down long scales for use on short and medium scales successfully plenty of times. I've read that crimping the string on the "keeper" side before cutting helps.

I decided to give these strings a whirl on my Jazz bass, I really like the tone; bright but low finger noise. Like some others have said, the tension is fine, I'm currently tuning to Drop D and have no issues with floppy strings. If these last a while, I'll definitely keep using them.

I've been recommending these strings to those who want a traditional acoustic bass sound unplugged but without the squeaks and screeches of the traditional bronze strings. But on a Jazz bass? Interesting...

Yeah, there have been a few other cases of folks trying them on solid body electrics and being pleased with the results (haven't tried that yet myself, but they're my go-to string for ABGs) - I'm surprised & pleased how versatile they seem to be.

The video on GHS's page is what made me curious, since it shows a clip of them being used on a standard electric bass. The standard pressurewounds are next on my list, for sure.
