So I've never actually played any musical instrument and my brother plays guitar. I wanted to just hang around here and check out some stuff about basses because that'll probably be when I play if I ever feel like trying it.

you don't need thousands of dollars to get started. You can get started for a few hundred dollars. An SX or Squire or Ibanez bass and a little 15 watt practice amp wouldn't put you back a whole lot, but I don't know where you're at in life. I've had times I didn't know how I was going to pay the bills and eat and would have killed for $300 bucks.
