New headless build… might be a long thread :-)

Oh, and Luminlays are AWESOME!

I'd like to do it fibre optic so the LED is in the cavity. I saw a build like this once, it might have been here or maybe TDPRI.
I have a unique prototype that I’m playing with that is similar to using LED for lighting up the plastic fiber optic. The approach that I’m using is quite a bit different but it does keep the LEDs out of the neck cavity so it could be serviceable, and would allow me to apply animation to the colors as well. Stay tuned it’s something that no one‘s done before, I’ll let ya know if it works. :)

Okay it was a full day of work and adjustments, here’s my final changes.
  1. I rerouted the bridge an 3/16” deeper so I can get super low action
  2. I re-carved the neck it’s much thinner between frets 1-7 and I thinned out the heel quite a bit
  3. Added a Zebrawood veneer to the front of the neck and matched the color to the body
  4. Completely re-sprayed the neck after the additional carving and sanding
  5. I had two frets that needed leveled and crowned after the lower action

Well, when I started this thread, I said it was gonna be a long one and the plan was to start out with three initial builds and in5 short months those are all now complete with this trio.

I learned a ton, I built a lot of tooling and had a tons of fun. And as you may have seen in the other thread, I upgraded my laser to a 17 x 36 fully enclosed with exhaust system that really sped up the process of cutting templates, controller covers and fingerboards.

Now the real work begins… after finishing up the last of these three builds and waiting for six weeks after ordering, the real project has finally showed up… the CNC is finally here for some fun winter projects.

I’m currently working on the build out of the enclosure that’ll sit on top of the rolling bench with drawers, power and dust collection. At the same time I’ve been working on the 3D models of some bodies and necks that I plan to cut.

This is probably gonna make this thread quite a bit longer, but I think there’s a lot to be learned here. If you’ve already gone down this path and you have experiences to share, please drop me a note here or point me to the links if you’ve already posted some content.

I've done a few and have 2 more in progress. One thing to consider is blocking the light leak in the neck pocket where the LED is shining from the body to the fibers in the neck. I really like the concept of a nearly bulletproof neck once everything is epoxied in place.

I was going to shroud the LED/fibre interface with glue lined heatshrink. No way I want it visible to the outside world, except where I want it to be. I have all the gear to do a proof of concept but it's a bit far down the list, especially as the weather here looks like my garage may be a (mild) stream in the next couple of hours.
