Double Bass New Ischell Mic, Gear Junkie Review Coming

My long-suffering wife (SWMBO) has accused me of NEVER READING THE DIRECTIONS.

Well, your honor, I wish to plead GUILTY AS CHARGED.

For no particular reason I thought I'd re-make the putty 'donut' and use the white putty this time (I used the gray last time). Well, guess what I saw when I looked at the little container that held the putty:

I was definitely interested in trying to get a brighter sound than what I had so far, that is why I experimented with using the low-cut switch and moving the placement.

Well, I put on the white putty and WOW. I wouldn't have believed the difference. I haven't recorded it yet but I have to say I am really getting the MBOL now. Have to say I'm pretty psyched. I'll do a recording either later tonight or tomorrow but my wife just informed me that it is wine time, and after all, one does not ignore SWMBO.

I got new putty earlier this year and have been hooked on the grey putty. The white putty sounded nice on my McLagan 5 string, but did not have a good feedback ceiling. The grey surprisingly is more feedback resistant and when plugged into an AI Clarus and Doubleshot, gives me the closest to MBOL that I have ever gotten.

Well count me among those you would really like to hear some more clips of the AKG C411 to compare with the Ischell. Also, where does one get these different kinds of putty? Might it be useful for Ehrlund EAP and C411 users to experiment with different types of putty as well?

A few days ago I received a new package of Blu-Tak to replace the tiny remaining amount of "white tak" that came with my used Ehrlund EAP. Reading Rick's chronicle of different colored putties and tones makes me wonder if I'll be tossing and turning tonight worrying if I got the right one. I've got to stop reading this Forum...

We already had the putty discussion a few years ago. At that time mostly about white (Faber-Castell), green (Schertler) and blue (Blue-Tac) putty.

I got my old used C411 with a lot of dissolved black AKG putty and don‘t want that anywhere on an instrument. Might not be a problem if you remove the putty every few years, but I had the white for the EAP (and a bit of the rather expensive green one) and the white is easy to get in Germany (it is made over here), so I used a very thin layer of the white putty for my AKG. Blue-Tac is either expensive over here and/or hard to find.

New Better Sound Placement and Setting for the Ischell

I moved the Ischell mic to right below the E side bridge foot. I also did some EQing by cutting some mids around 600.

I think you'll agree that this is a better sound. Still doesn't have the 'air' that the Xlson has but that is probably more important for recording than live.

I feel that the Ischell sounds much more 'Natural' in this clip than the previous one.

Both mics do an excellent job of blocking 'Bleed', which you can easily see when I mute my announcing mic at about the 33 second mark.

Thoughts/

Hi Kristian, YES, that is JUST the sound of the Ischell. There is no other room mic picking up the bass or other ambient sounds. The Ischell is going into my Genzler Gollihur Model amp and using the POST-EQ DI to my Zoom recorder.

It's a good question you ask since in the past I have occasionally had the mic or pickup recording 'tainted' by acoustic sound from the room. You have to isolate the mic you are testing in order to get an accurate impression.

Sounds lovely Rick, incidentally that's approximately the same location where the Ehrlund EAP is located on my bass.

Yeah now I'm definitely intrigued to try this when funds allow. Like @ablumley noticed, it's not as boxy as the x48c. Do you have any gigs coming up where you're going to try this out with a drummer? That's what I'm most curious about. Paired with a cheap little ART tube mic pre-amp, I've been able to play with some roaring drummers using my x48c with little to no feedback issues.

OOPS !!!! I think I Posted the Wrong File

Up above in post #33 I believe I posted the Xlson Mic file TWICE - Once labeled as the Ischell. Yeah, my face is bright red right now. My sincere apologies.

So, assuming that I DID make that mistake (it was actually brought to my attention by Fischer Ischell himself who wrote to me saying he couldn't hear any difference between the two recordings.

I am reposting the CORRECT FILES BELOW. I will also then re-record another file and I think I can/should add some treble back in to the Ischell mic. But for now, here are the CORRECTLY LABELED FILES:
